East Hill Elementary is a school wide Title I school of approximately 540 students, located in a residential area near downtown Kent. East Hill serves kindergarten through sixth grade students from richly diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Some programs implemented at East Hill include ELL (English Language Learner), LAP (Learning Assistance Program), Special Education, and Welcome Room. We also have a before school Extended Learning program for some of our ELL students as well as an afterschool Century 21 Program for reading and mathematics for some of our students. The staff at East Hill embraces each student and strives to make a positive impact on him/her academically, socially, physically, and emotionally. We have a warm and caring environment with a dedicated staff that provides quality learning opportunities in all content areas. In March of 2011, we opened up a new building, the Parent Engagement Resource Center (PERC), which allows many opportunities for student and family engagement.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: This position is part of the KAP bargaining unit.

ASSIGNMENT: Paraeducators assist teacher(s) and students in English Language Learners (ELL) programs. The focus of the position will be the development of spoken and written language. The paraeducator's duties include small group instruction, one-on-one instruction, preparing materials for a lesson, correcting papers, teaming, collaboration between general education and special education staff.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATION:
  1. AA degree, 72 quarter-hour college credits, OR ParaPro Assessment with a score of 461 or higher. (Transcripts or proof of parapro score must on file to be considered for an interview.)
  2. Proof of High School completion. Copy of diploma or transcripts must be on file at start of employment. College transcripts that specifically state completion of high school will be accepted in lieu of high school diploma.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Must develop positive rapport with students.
  2. Must possess skills and experience in working with limited English speaking students.
  3. Must possess good English skills.
  4. Must have the ability to communicate with main-stream teachers, principals and parents of students when issues arise based on academics, attendance or behavior.
  5. Candidate with working knowledge of required ELL data and reports desired.
  6. Ability to exhibit multicultural and ethnic understanding and sensitivity with the ability to communicate effectively with all cultural groups in the school community.
  7. Ability to communicate in another language.
  8. Prefer candidate that is a team player, positive, with good communication skills.
  9. Must be enthusiastic, positive and be a team member and able to demonstrate flexibility working with other staff.
  10. Must maintain positive learning environment and have ability to relate to all students, parents, and colleagues.
  11. Desired characteristics are: flexibility; patience; ability to organize ideas, time and materials to accomplish goals; enthusiasm; ability to express ideas clearly and understand concepts being discussed; ability and willingness to develop favorable relationships with students; and willingness to model behavior deemed appropriate by the school district and the community.
