Job Summary -The Chicago Public Schools (CPS) has set ambitious goals to ensure that every child - in every school and every neighborhood - has access to a world-class learning experience from birth, resulting in graduation from high school, college and career-ready.

This position oversees Chicago district yellow bus vendors and para-transit vendors providing approximately 1,300 buses and the expenditure of approximately $100,000,000 per year. It ensures vendor contractual compliance and delivery of safe and efficient services to the 22,000 students transported daily. It supports various programs at approximately 600 public and non-public schools to which CPS transports students.

The Manager, Vendor Operations will be held accountable for the following responsibilities:

Typical Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Manages daily vendor operations to ensure the contractual scope of service delivery

  • Reviews and coordinates vendor audits to ensure CPS transportation requirements are met by the vendors

  • Analyzes feedback on vendor services forms, field teams and school Principals

  • Initiates and crafts professional development and training programs for bus drivers and vendor bus aides to ensure safe and efficient transportation of students to and from school

  • Participates in overall strategy development to achieve operational objectives

  • Develops and implements Key Performance Indicator targets

  • Develops departmental policies and procedures to improve utilization of buses and decrease vendor costs for CPS

  • Hires, trains, develops, monitors, and evaluates the performance of staff. Review and recommend personnel actions for approval

  • Performs other duties as they may be assigned



In order to be successful and achieve the above responsibilities, the Job Title must possess the following qualifications:

Type of Education Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in logistics, supply chain management, hospitality, information technology, business or related field. Master's Degree preferred.



Type of Experience Required:

  • Five (5) or more years of progressively responsible experience in the area of transportation, or a combination of education and related experience, including supervisory / management experience

  • High level of computer proficiency including experience with productivity software such as Microsoft Office (Word, Power Point, Excel, Visio, etc.)

  • Working knowledge of generating statistical reports and ability to draw business conclusions

  • Basic knowledge of transit operations industry and federal and state transportation practices and regulations



Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong verbal and written communications skills to maintain effective working relationships with departments, employees, managers of the organization, as well as outside entities.

  • Strong analytical skills, attention to details

  • Ability to work in an emotionally charged environment responding to inquiries of parents of diverse learners whose children are in temporary living situations

  • Demonstrate high levels of instructional expertise, integrity, honesty, credibility, and the courage to make difficult yet necessary decisions

  • Effective strategic planning capabilities, including the ability to establish long-term vision and goals, and align/manage activities toward goal fulfillment

  • Strong leadership and team building skills, e.g. ability to develop high performing teams united around a clear vision for serving schools and achieving student success



Residency Requirement:

As a condition of employment with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), employees are required to live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of their CPS hire date and must maintain residency throughout their employment with the district.
