The Director of Special Education ensures the success of Special Education programs at the school. This role is responsible for developing and implementing operations and procedures related to special programs throughout the school framework, in alignment with all local, state, and federal guidelines and all compliance reporting. This position has the responsibility to manage all support staff whose direct focus is on special programs compliance through informed oversight, placement activities, effective program design and measurement, and serving as a resource to teachers and administrators.

  • Develop and disseminate best practices for special education under IDEA in the virtual school setting.
  • Evaluates overall operations of department and programs.
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of all IEPs, while implementing methods to assure both qualitative and quantitative compliancy as well as measurable student growth.
  • Provide professional development opportunities and resources on special programs-related issues for all school stakeholders, including school personnel, families and contracted service providers.
  • Oversee the timely completion of periodic reports as required for federal, state, and local regulatory agencies.
  • Approve contracts with third-party agencies for related services, prioritizing high quality services at a reasonable cost to the school.
  • Provides oversight of the instructional practices of the special education department.
  • Provides oversight and management of the procedures related to special education.
  • Provides oversight of the special education enrollment process.
  • Adheres to and assists in the development of the Special Education Department budget
  • Develops department operational goals.
  • Participate in selection and training process for new department staff members
  • Reviews and approves department expense reports, time-off requests and timecards/attendance for direct reports
  • Oversees all out of district placement students.
  • Emphasizes and nurtures two-way communication.
  • Develop and disseminate best practices for special education under IDEA in the virtual school setting.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Directly supervises the special education teaching and support staff including but not limited to the special programs administrative team, related services team, school psychologists, special education administrative assistant, and additional office staff. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; recognition and performance management; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Minimum Required Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Special Education or Education Administration or School Psychologist with 5 + years of experience
  • Certificates and Licenses: Special Education teacher certification, Supervisor of Special Education certification and/or PA Principal Certification, School Psychologist license in [PA].
  • PDE required clearances for school-based employees

Minimum Required Skill Set
  • High level content knowledge of IDEA and state special education regulations
  • Strong communication skills: written, verbal, presentation
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint

Preferred Qualifications
  • Special Education Supervisor certification clear and concise written form.
  • Work successfully and positively with all students to provide them with assistance in meeting their educational needs.
  • Attend and participate in local, regional and national conferences.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, teachers, parents, and the public.
  • Effectively welcome and embrace differences among employees and citizens.
  • Must be able to successfully complete a background investigation.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule as needed.

Certificates and Licenses
  • Certificates and Licenses: Special Education teacher certification, Supervisor of Special Education certification and/or PA Principal Certification, School Psychologist license in [PA].

  • This is an office-based position. The noise level in the office is usually moderate (computers, printers, light foot traffic). Must live inPennsylvania.
  • This position could include limited travel and could include limited overnight travel. This is estimated to be less than 20% of the time.
