The Truancy Specialist works to ensure that school age children are attending school by overseeing the attendance and truancy process. The role works closely with team members who monitor student attendance/progress and investigating cases of unexcused or excessive absences. This role will help with communications delivered to families, following warnings protocols; working with Community Family Advisors, Academic teams, Registrars and Counselors to support truant students.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential duties.
  • Acts as the subject matter expert for knowing and implementing the Virtual Charter School Reform and Transparency Act of 2020 and ensuring school compliance with the act;
  • Coordinates school-wide attendance efforts and absenteeism prevention programming with a two-fold focus on (1) educating families on the importance of attendance with a focus on prevention; and (2) intervening to fix the underlying issues that lead to absenteeism;
  • Works with all staff to monitor student adherence to the school’s attendance policies to include: implementing protocols and processes such as communication notices to targeted student population; referring families to the appropriate administrator for truancy intervention meetings when necessary; and creating and holding truancy meetings with school administrators;
  • Collaborates with administrative teams to improve systems to monitor instructional activities to meet attendance requirements per Transparency Act law;
  • Monitors 15-day withdrawal documentation and reporting to the state to maintain compliance;
  • Partners with School Compliance Coordinator to ensure state reporting and withdrawals are tracked due to transfer policy within Transparency Act of 2020;
  • Partners with School Based Enrollment Coordinator to include: processing and tracking withdraws and approving and tracking reinstatements;
  • Responsible for reporting attendance/truancy to resident local school district and district attorney per Transparency Act of 2020;
  • Collaborates with Data Manager to create attendance/truancy reports for the school, county and state, as required;
  • Responsible for transfer law implementation tracking per State Department guidance;
  • Brainstorms with student support teams/academics to develop individualized action plans to increase student attendance and engagement;
  • Works with the Student Support Administrator, Head of School and local school board to develop improved procedures that address attendance;
  • Supports Testing Coordinator and Operations throughout the state mandated testing planning and implementation process to meet the 95% student attendance requirement.

Supervisory Responsibilities: This position has no formal supervisory responsibilities.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Degree (GED) Certificate AND
  • Two (2) years of truancy experience OR
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.

Certificates and Licenses: None required.

OTHER REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Knowledge of state school attendance laws, and other pertinent laws regarding K-12 education;
  • Knowledge of state specific court procedures regarding truancy;
  • Familiarity with online learning environment;
  • Strong organizational and time management skills;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.);
  • Ability to travel 25% of the time;
  • Ability to pass required background check.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Three (3) years of experience working with families in similar capacity, enrollment or truancy
  • Post-secondary degree especially in Education, Counseling, Human Services or related field of study.

  • This is a home-based position but may require one or more days a week in the office as determined by the supervisor. Must live inOklahoma.
