SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision of the school site Principal and/or the Washoe County School District Office of Accountability, and in partnership with district and school site staff, the Student Voice Advocate will (a) intentionally, purposefully, and systematically elicit student viewpoints on specific and relevant topics for school improvement purposes and (b) engage the student body in resulting actions to address school improvement.

EXEMPLARY DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES

The Student Voice Advocate will be responsible for elevating and advocating for student voice in the school setting. More specifically, the Student Voice Advocate will perform duties including, but not limited to:
  • Building and maintaining a Student Advisory Council, or similar group, to support school improvement based on the feedback and ideas of students. This will include using equitable methods for identifying student participants who are representative of the student body, and using the Five Elements of Student Voice to help students make positive changes at their school. The Five Elements are topics are relevant to students, 2. students have ongoing discussions with adults, 3. students are involved in planning and decisions, 4. shared power between students and adults, and 5. students are involved in the actions to address school improvement.
  • Working directly with students to develop critical thinking skills and use of student voice methods to investigate school issues. This can include supporting students to use school data (chronic absenteeism, climate survey) to guide improvement planning, conducting focus groups with students about key school issues, and administering surveys developed with students to gather additional student feedback, among many others.
  • Working with the school site Principal, other school staff, students, and/or the Office of Accountability to identify school-wide challenges using school data, eliciting relevant student insights using student voice activities and engagement strategies, and involving students in school improvement efforts using the Plan, Do, Study, Act cycle.
  • Collaborate with District departments, secure resources, and plan for opportunities for students to demonstrate and distribute the results of their student voice projects with school and district audiences.
  • Working with the school site Principal, students, school counselors, and other school staff to identify students at-risk for poor academic and/or social outcomes, elicit student viewpoints, and involve students in individualized education plans.
  • Collecting data, in partnership with the Office of Accountability staff, to evaluate the implementation and effectiveness of student voice activities.
  • Demonstrating expertise in the field of student voice, modeling effective student voice strategies within the school setting, and partnering with school site Principal, students, and/or Office of Accountability to provide on-site training, coaching and supports to school site staff.

This position requires building relationships with WCSD departments including but not limited to Counseling, Social Emotional Learning, Student Voice, Equity & Diversity, MTSS, Curriculum and Instruction, English Language Development, etc.).

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education/Experience : Any combination of education and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:
  • High school diploma or equivalent; some college experience is desirable.

  • AND
  • Two (2) years of experience with students or families in school, or community agencies. Bilingual is preferred, but not required.

  • Knowledge of : School and district organizational structure and functioning, including an understanding of curriculum, standards, programs, and initiatives that are implemented across the district; basic concepts of child and adolescent development including relationship-building and engagement strategies; academic achievement gaps and barriers students face; Social and Emotional Learning competencies, including best practices for engaging vulnerable populations of students; an ability to organize meetings, projects or workshops based on the needs of students and/or school staff.

    Skilled at : Speaking, active listing and explicitly appreciating diverse opinions and viewpoints; recognizing and appreciating cultural differences, and maintaining respect for different cultural backgrounds; maintaining confidentiality of information; interpreting and explaining district policies and procedures as they relate to the position; preparing and giving accurate written and/or oral reports, and reviewing and interpreting the reports of others; maintaining constructive relationships with those contacted at work.

    Licenses/Certificates : None Required.

    Special Considerations : Must be willing and able to work a varied schedule as some meetings/workshops with students might be held outside of regular school hours.

    Salaries are subject to adjustment and may increase and decrease each fiscal year. New employees hired by Washoe County School District are normally placed on the entry step of the grade of the position.

    Additional Job Information :

    This position is an 40 hour per week, One Year Only position ending June 2022. This position is grant-funded through the Re-engage and Accelerated Learning for Local Youth (RALLY) grant and is contingent upon continued funding. The hiring administrator may retain incumbent for the duration of the grant without re-advertising.

    Eligible employees who are regularly scheduled to work less than 20 hours per week receive Social Security benefits, and the Salary Increases, Longevity Bonuses, and Credit Union benefits; eligible employees who are regularly scheduled to work 20 to 24.75 hours per week received PERS retirement benefits, and the Salary Increases, Longevity Bonuses and Credit Union benefits listed below; eligible employees who are regularly scheduled to work 25 to 27.25 hours per week receive the benefits listed below, with the exception of Medical, Dental, Vision Insurance; eligible employees who are regularly scheduled to work 27.5 hours per week or more receive full benefits of the District.

    Holiday: Eligible employees receive up to eleven (11) paid holidays each year. Vacation: Eligible employees receive up to twenty (20) days of paid vacation each year. Sick Leave: Eligible employees receive up to fifteen (15) days of paid sick leave each year. Medical, Dental, Vision Insurance: Eligible employees may select an insurance plan wherein WCSD contributes 100% of insurance premiums. Eligible employee paid dependent medical insurance is available for an employee's dependents. Insurance Premiums - Summer Months: WCSD contributes 100% of the district paid portion of eligible employee's insurance premiums for employees who are not scheduled to work in the summer. Life Insurance: The District contributes 100 % of employee's life insurance premiums. Salary Increases: In addition to any negotiated increases each year, eligible employees receive salary increases each July, for the first fifteen (15) years of employment. Longevity Bonuses: Eligible employees receive annual bonuses as follows: 12-14 years of employment, $700; 15-17 years of employment, $1, 000; 18 + years of employment, $1, 100. Credit Union: Outstanding benefits are available through the Credit Union.

    No State Income Tax. No Social Security deductions for most positions working 20 hours per week or more. Retirement benefit offered is the State of Nevada retirement system, Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), which is one of the best in the country.

    PERS ELIGIBLE POSITIONS:
    Eligible Employees who select the employer paid salary schedule (Schedule A) will have Washoe County School District (WCSD) contribute 100% of the employee's retirement contributions. Eligible employees who select the employer-employee paid salary schedule (Schedule B) will have a portion of the legislatively designated amount paid by WCSD to PERS for retirement benefits and the employee, in turn, will pay the remaining portion of the legislatively designated amount of his/her salary to PERS. These options are introduced and explained in detail during the New Employee Orientation upon selection for employment.

    New employees will be fingerprinted upon hire and every five years thereafter and will have $58.50 deducted from their first paycheck to help defray the cost of fingerprinting. Non-licensed employees will have $58.50 deduction when their fingerprints are completed every five years. Fingerprint fees are subject to change.

    Temporary employees working less than 6 months do not receive benefits.
