NATURE OF POSITION:
Under the supervision of the Director II - Student Support Services, the School Health and Wellness Coordinator is responsible for supervising School Nurses and implementing the school health program, in addition to performing those duties and responsibilities outlined in the School Nurse position description as needed.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:


  • Perform all functions listed in the School Nurse position description, as required and where deployed
  • Obtain feedback from Principals on the performance of duties and responsibilities of School Nurses and to consider in conducting performance evaluations
  • Evaluate services in the school health program to plan for more comprehensive services to students, families, and staff as necessary; assist in the formulation of the District's wellness and health program, including but not limited to, nutrition services, health services, health and safe school environment, counseling and mental health services, staff wellness promotion, parent and community involvement, physical education, and health education
  • Create systems and processes to track the schools' progress in attaining a culture of wellness utilizing quantifiable and data-driven rubrics, including but not limited to, methods of evaluation that assess the contribution of nursing, psychology and/or social work in school health areas on a continuous basis related to health needs
  • Coordinate with other professionals and citizen groups in researching, planning and implementing the District's wellness and health program
  • Collaborate with Child Nutrition Services to provide wellness education opportunities in and out of the kitchen, as well as resources to help students, families and staff incorporate these lessons into their daily lives
  • Serve on or chair the school district Wellness committee and facilitate collaboration among school health program personnel and other school staff in the development of a school culture that supports health, well-being, and educational achievement
  • Coordinate activities of service providers with other services in the District; communicate with the Health Department, school system, and other community resources and agencies to develop improved systems of early case findings and referrals for improved child care
  • Assist the superintendent, school principals and other school staff to establish links between student achievement and health
  • Maintain and implement the documentation requirements for all state and federally mandated student health records, including physical examinations and immunizations required by law; coordinate activities with Student Support Services as needed
  • Coordinate through service providers the appropriate use of screening techniques in vision, hearing, dental and other tests; arrange for the training of teachers, School Nurses, or volunteers in performing screenings; plan for the follow-up of suspected findings; assist teachers, School Nurses, and volunteers in developing an awareness of signs of illness or other health problems
  • Provide for technical assistance and professional development opportunities for school district personnel that support the school district's health programs and address emergencies, including training and procedures in First Aid and CPR for school and district personnel, use and placement of AEDs, and medication administration, to include Epi-Pen injectors
  • Attend state and regional School Nurse Coordinator meetings
  • Assist in the identification of students in need of a school health care plan, to include writing and implementing plans for identified students
  • Provide training for school staff members who are assigned to perform medical procedures or who are monitoring a student with health needs such as food allergies, diabetes, and seizure disorders
  • Observe the health service area to ensure compliance with legal and District requirements regarding the functional service area, including the maintenance of proper supplies, the storing of medications, and the utilization of appropriate documentation systems
  • Observe and provide feedback on the practice of the school nurses to ensure appropriate patient care, use of universal precautions and proper safety procedures, as well as proper implementation of the required screening programs
  • Provide assistance as necessary in managing infectious illness outbreaks
  • Coordinate presentations by various agencies and professionals on pertinent health care topics for School Nurses and Student Support Services staff
  • Encourage nursing and health services staff participation in conferences and workshops at the local and state level, addressing a range of school health issues
  • Coordinate the collection of data and compile accurate and complete health reports as required by the school system and state agencies
  • Develop, update, and implement written policies and procedures for the clinical services and programs addressing health and mental health issues
  • Act as a liaison and promote positive collaboration with community providers for a range of services addressing child and adolescent health and mental health
  • Participate and collaborate with administrators in identification of qualified candidates, screening of applications, interview process, selection and orientation of School Nurses as needed
  • Comply with and support school and District regulations and policies
  • Assume responsibility for professional growth and keep licenses and skills up-to-date
  • Manage nurse coverage by assigning substitute nurses and/or serving as the School Nurse in the absence of other School Nurses
  • Order and deliver all medical supplies for nurses and special education teachers
  • Serve on the Truancy Response Team
  • Assist with Medicaid billing, to include signing off on monthly billing documentation for LPNs
  • Coordinate all vaccination clinics for staff and students
  • Perform other duties as assigned


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Must be competent and properly prepared professionally to coordinate school health programs and policies using knowledge of: Virginia laws and regulations related to school health programs, FERPA and HIPPA requirements as applied in the school setting, oral and written communication skills necessary for communication to school district personnel, parents, and community health personnel, universal safety precautions required by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines. Must be able to mobilize local resources for school health services, including but not limited to, the local Health Department, School Nurses and other school staff, and community professionals in the health services field. Present reports regarding use of school health services and student data relevant to attendance and achievement to the Danville School Board as requested. Ability to work independently with little direction. Ability to provide guidance in interpretation and implementation of health and safety related regulations and best practices per state and federal laws.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduated from an accredited nursing program required; Bachelor's degree in Nursing, Master's degree preferred
  • Must be licensed as a registered nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia and in good standing with the Virginia Board of Nursing
  • Active Basic Life Support BLS/CPR/AED for Healthcare Providers certification with hands-on training required
  • Five (5) years of successful experience in public health administration preferred

START DATE: As soon as possible after selection
SALARY / STIPEND: Salary Range: $71,643 - $103,880 annually, depending on experience and advanced degrees. Danville School Board pays the employee cost, in full, for state-mandated life insurance; and in part for state retirement and health insurance. Other benefits - sick leave and personal leave.
