Job Summary
The Journeyman Plumber is responsible for the maintenance of plumbing systems within Anchorage School District facilities. The location of the work station is subject to contract language concerning shift location/bids. Maintenance employees work a 4/10 schedule with weekends and holidays off. Job Requirements
The following are required:
  1. A high school diploma or equivalent education.
  2. Must possess a state of Alaska Journeyman Plumber certificate.
  3. Must possess a Municipality of Anchorage Journeyman Plumber certificate.
  4. The Anchorage School District requires that the selected applicant for this position be given a conditional offer of employment contingent upon successfully passing a post offer/pre-employment physical capacities assessment. The following are preferred:
  1. A Municipality of Anchorage Backflow Assembly Tester certificate of qualification.
  2. A class A treated and untreated small water systems license.
  3. If preferred licenses are not held at time of employment, their attainment needs to occur within 12 months.
  4. Minimum four years of experience within the past six years in the field of plumbing. Work experience must evidence ability to perform tasks assigned.


Essential Job Functions
  1. Installs, repairs, or replaces domestic and sanitary fixtures, grades sewer lines, and repairs and replaces piping and components of heating systems.
  2. Uses experience and knowledge to perform third class boiler license work.
  3. Works with water wells and water distribution.
  4. Interprets and work from plans, prints, specifications, and established maintenance procedures.
  5. Proficiently uses appropriate computer applications for assigned areas of responsibility.
  6. Performs preventive maintenance on plumbing equipment.
  7. Troubleshoots, analyzes, and repairs plumbing systems and installs new and replacement plumbing fixtures.
  8. Corrects minor heat problems and makes heat adjustments.
  9. Repairs, replaces, and certifies backflow preventers.
  10. Orders material as required for assigned work.
  11. Cleans pressure vessels as needed.
  12. Unplugs sewer lines, lavatories, and water closets.
  13. Thaws frozen water and sewer lines.
  14. Routinely works at heights over 20 feet.
  15. Works within established safety procedures.
  16. Understands and carries out both oral and written instructions and writes reports.
  17. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with others.

Physical /Mental Demands
The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.

Work is performed in a professional environment with a wide variety of individuals having differing functions, personalities and abilities, including working with diverse groups of people in a variety of different settings.

While performing the duties of this job the employee may be regularly exposed to a video display. The employee may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
