    JOB TITLE: Specialist, Communications

    REPORTS TO: Executive Director of Communications

    WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Exempt

    PAY GRADE: AM 2

    PRIMARY PURPOSE:

    The Communications Specialist reports directly to the Executive Director of Communications and will support principal and school communications by producing a variety of principal and school communication including news releases, web stories, parent communiqués and media responses. He or she will also assist in training department spokespersons, campus principals and campus communications liaisons in communications best practices, including AP Style. In addition, he or she will assist with the planning and promotion of district events, creating run of shows, programs, speeches and talking points as needed. All employees of SISD are expected to act with integrity, support organizational goals, communicate in a clear and respectful manner, championing the needs of our students and drive continuous improvement.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Required:
    • Bachelor's degree in English, Communications or related field from an accredited College or University
    • Three years demonstrated success in writing and editing general organizational communications, including strategic communiqués for executives.
    • Three years experience working with the Associated Press (AP) Stylebook.
    Preferred:
    • Master's degree from an accredited college or university
    • Experience in school district communications

    SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
    • Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
    • Demonstrated skills in writing and editing
    • Strong copy-editing and proofreading skills
    • Knowledge of Associated Press (AP) Stylebook
    • Ability to use desktop publishing hardware and software
    • Ability to work as a team member

    MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
    • Work closely with the Executive Director of Communications in producing school communications.
    • Assist with training district and campus personnel in communications best practices.
    • Assist with producing district publications.
    • Assist with the planning and execution of district events.
    • Support Social Media planning and coverage as needed.
    • Provide editing support to the communications team.
    • Works as a member of the communications team to maintain the district's brand.
    • Participate in professional growth opportunities.
    • Perform other duties and accept other responsibilities as assigned.

    WORKING CONDITIONS:

    The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: physical mobility, standing, prolonged sitting, prolonged use of computer, some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling up to 15lbs. This position will also require prolonged and irregular hours and the ability to work independently. Mental demands: Ability to solve problems and deal with a variety of situations; ability to interpret a variety of data; ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory, ability to be effective in both oral and written communication; ability to maintain emotional control under stress and work with frequent interruptions.

That number will change soon with the construction of several new facilities – including two middle schools, three ninth-grade centers and a state-of-the-art stadium that will serve the entire district – all funded by a bond referendum approved by voters in 2016.
