The Office of Student Services (OSS) is responsible for providing a variety of supports and services to students in Cambridge Public Schools (CPS). Our programs are dedicated to ensuring equitable access and success for students with disabilities and students who have advanced learning needs.

The Role :
The Special Education teacher leads substantially separate classroom of students with social, emotional, learning, and behavioral disabilities.

Reports to the Assistant Superintendent of Student Services and Office of Student Services Coordinator.

Key Responsibilities :
  • Lead the classroom team to further the emotional, behavioral, and educational development of the students in the Structured Academics Program.
  • Provide rigorous, joyful and culturally responsive learning experiences while setting high expectations for student learning
  • Advocate for the needs of the students served in the program
  • Plan sequential units of study that makes learning cumulative, connects learning across disciplines, and are based on the learning standards and grade level curriculum.
  • Prepare lessons and materials necessary for daily instruction, setting clear, reasonable standards and expectations for students in all academic subjects
  • Collaborate with community agencies and outside service providers
  • Develop Individualized Education Plans for students based on various types of data specific to the students present levels of functioning and performance
  • Consult with general education, special education and related service teachers and staff
  • Accommodate and modify for student learning and support the general education teacher with implementing appropriate accommodations in the general education setting
  • Implement behavior plans for each student
  • Ensures effective instruction and support for students with disabilities
  • Ensure implementation of student's Individualized Education Plan
  • Ensure effective collaboration with families, community supports/services, related service staff and general education teachers
  • Any related duties as outlined by the Assistant Superintendent and/or Coordinator of Student Services
Your Skill Set:
As the incoming Structured Academics Teacher, you will possess many, though perhaps not all, of the following characteristics and qualifications:
  • Broad knowledge and experience of programs and services specific to students with social and emotional disabilities and knowledge of trauma informed practices
  • Excellent skills in oral & written communication, organization, classroom management, problem solving
  • Demonstrated ability in specially designing instruction for specific student needs
  • Demonstrated ability in collaborating and supporting parents and families
  • General knowledge of various assessments and data collection systems to monitor student progress and skills
  • General knowledge of state and federal special education guidelines and requirements
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university in Special Education, masters preferred. Massachusetts Certification of students with moderate/severe disabilities
  • Experience teaching or student teaching in an urban school setting
  • Experience teaching or student teaching students with moderate to severe disabilities and/or multiple disabilities
  • Preferred knowledge with Collaborative Problem Solving, Zones of Regulation, Social Thinking and Crisis Prevention Intervention (training offered by the district)
