This is a 1.0 FTE Position. Neely-O'Brien is the district's largest elementary school serving more than 700 students and located in the Kent valley. Our school serves first grade through sixth grade students who are rich in ethnic and cultural diversity. Our kindergarten students are currently attending Kent Valley Early Learning Center. They arrive at Neely-O'Brien and are bussed to/from KVELC daily. Our families are highly mobile and come from varying economic and academic backgrounds. The staff at Neely-O'Brien is committed to providing a positive learning environment which capitalizes on the diverse nature of our population and cultivates high academic achievement through our rich curriculum and intentional interventions that meet students at their current levels. We strive to promote each child's academic, emotional, social and physical development. We focus on the basic skills, including opportunities for enrichment and remediation. We take pride in our music and physical education programs ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: This position is for a fourth grade teacher to support our Dual Language Program providing instruction in English while collaborating with English teaching partner.
BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of the principal, this position provides the leadershipto plan, organize, and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development in becoming fully bilingual, biliterate, and bicultural within a 50/50 dual language program.

Major duties of the teacher include, but are not limited to: management of instructional time; management of student behavior; instructional presentation; instructional monitoring of student performance; instructional feedback; facilitating instruction; interacting within the educational environment; and performing non-instructional duties. Essential job duties are as follows:
  • Assists the principal in achieving school and district objectives and carrying out policies established by the Board of Directors to Successfully Prepare All Students for Their Future.
  • Directs and evaluates the learning experiences of the students in two languages; both curricular and co-curricular activities.
  • Provides guidance to students that will promote their educational development in two languages.
  • Provides guidance in two languages to students that promotes good citizenship.
  • Develops progress monitoring systems to track progress on individual student goals and objectives.
  • Adjusts instruction when there are significant differences between actual and predicted performance in two languages.
  • Provides and models direct instruction utilizing best practices.
  • Works in conjunction with instructional colleagues to analyze and interpret student achievement data for the purpose of determining individual instructional needs.
  • Collaborates with instructional colleagues to analyze student work relative to content standards to improve classroom instruction and student achievement.
  • Supports instructional colleagues in the use of standards-based core and supplemental materials.
  • Collaborates with district office and building administrators to implement comprehensive and powerful instructional programs which ensure that students meet state standards.
  • Participates in site meetings, and collaborates with general education teachers, special education teachers, Educational Staff Associate staff, and classified staff in monitoring education programs.
  • Participates in effective instructional support trainings, curriculum development and technical assistance compliance trainings.
  • Collaborates with teachers/building staff to ensure a consistent and coordinated academic program/intervention plan for struggling learners.
  • Collaborates with Inclusive Education Services and Instructional Services to ensure a comprehensive and coherent continuum of services for students, utilizing instructional fidelity.
  • Maintains professional competency by attending district and other staff development conferences and workshops.
  • Communicates regularly with parents in a positive and constructive manner.
  • Maintains order in the classroom and in the building.
  • Maintains adequate and careful records as required by the principal and district.
  • Provides for the care of school property and appropriate use of supplies, equipment, and utilities.
  • Serves on committees and works on special projects. Assumes responsibility for co-curricular and other duties beyond regular classroom activities as determined by the principal and agreed upon by the teacher.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Bilingual and biliterate in Spanish and English.
  • Washington endorsement in one of the following areas; Bilingual Education or Elementary Education.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's degree in related field.
  • Proven successful experience in working with bilingual education.
  • Proven successful experience teaching in urban public education.
  • Proven successful experience in an ethnically diverse public school district.
  • Proven successful experience in working and learning in a Professional Learning Community.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of:

  • Current research-based strategies and instructional programs for students in a diverse, multi-cultural environment.
  • Principles, practices, trends, goals, and objectives of public education and bilingual education.
  • Research, best practices and technical aspects of field of specialty.
  • Effective facilitation skills for various professional interactions with adults.
  • Research methods and report writing techniques.
  • Record-keeping techniques.
  • District organization, operations, policies, and procedures.
  • Educational and business technology programs, procedures and methods, computer equipment, and computer software necessary to perform required duties.
  • Oral and written communication skills, including English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, vocabulary, composition, and skills in mathematics.
