Job Description

Audiologist

FUNCTIONAL PURPOSE

The educational audiologist delivers a full spectrum of hearing services to children. They diagnose, manage, and treat hearing problems. They are members of the school multidisciplinary team that facilitate listening, learning, and communication access via specialized assessments, monitor personal hearing instruments; recommend, fit, and manage hearing assistance technology; provide and recommend support services and resources; and advocate on behalf of the students. The educational audiologist provides evidence for needed services and technology, emphasizes access skill and supports, counsels children to promote personal responsibility and self-advocacy, collaborates with private sector audiologists, helps student transitions and teams with other school professionals to facilitate student learning.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

•Conducts individual student hearing evaluations and follow-up testing as required. Diagnoses hearing impairments and recommends appropriate case management techniques. Develops individualized programs for students.

•Contributes to the design of the educational plans for students with hearing loss.

•Receives and recommends student referrals. Initiates intervention programs and services. Consults with other staff members and outside professionals regarding individual cases. Interprets and refers information to appropriate school system personnel and outside resources.

•Provides audiology IEP support as related service provider.

•Contributes to the development of intervention strategies with students with hearing or auditory processing impairments including listening skills, speech development, reading, auditory discrimination, self-advocacy, and monitoring of individual amplification devices.

•Ensures timely calibration or diagnostic and screening audio logic equipment.

•Serves as a member, coordinator, or lead in an interdisciplinary team in the evaluation and/or management of students, central auditory processing difficulties according to currently accepted practice. Provides in-service to school staff and parents regarding central auditory processing and LEA guidelines.

•Projects annual budgetary expenses for successful program operation and expansion.

•Recommends and assists in the implementation of goals and objectives. Establishes methods for speech pathologists regarding hearing impaired students, implements practices and procedures.

•Evaluates operations and activities of assigned responsibilities. Recommend improvements and modifications. Prepares various reports on operations and activities.

•Supervises audiology assistants in their work assignments.

•Trains a variety of professionals (nurses, D/HH teacher, classroom teachers) on hearing screening procedures, technology use, and new technology.

•Performs related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

•Depth of knowledge of normal and disordered hearing processes, the educational services needed by deaf/hard of hearing children, and the operation of schools and services in the community.

•Knowledge of methods and techniques used in the examination, testing and assessment of hearing.

•Knowledge of hearing impaired student case management techniques.

•Knowledge of auditory equipment and appliances used in an educational setting.

•Knowledge of community resources available for the referral of hearing impaired students.

•Knowledge of general programs, policies and practices used in educational organizations.

•Knowledge of and experience in sound fiscal practices, including budgeting and management of department resources.

•Knowledge of Board of Examiners for speech language pathologist and audiologist regulations.

•Comprehensive understanding of IDEA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act as it relates to audiological practice and the provision of services to students in public schools.

•Knowledge of state and federal laws that pertain to audiology and the provision of services to students in public schools.

•Ability to assess and measure hearing limitations and prescribe appropriate case management techniques including equipment fitting, therapy, orientation, or referral.

•Ability to implement effective audiology programs considering student limitations and educational needs.

•Ability to provide training and support to parents/families regarding hearing differences and implications for language development, communication access, educational achievement, wellness, and other areas to facilitate a better understanding of the impact of auditory impairments on language development, communication access, learning literacy, and social development.

•Ability to maintain accurate and confidential student records.

•Ability to effectively represent WSFCS to the community.

•Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

•Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

•Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion.

Job Qualification

Pay Grade Certified Schedule | Full-time | 10 Months

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

•Minimum: Master's Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in audiology or related field

•Desirable: On year of experience in audiology is preferred.

CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:

North Carolina Board of Examiners License in Audiology is required.

Valid driver's License is required

Valid and up to date NC DPI licensure is required
