Job Description

English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher Assistant

FUNCTIONAL PURPOSE

The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of tasks for the professional staff in the English as a Second Language classroom and provides special assistance to English Learner (EL) students. Work involves assisting teachers with individual and small groups in the ESL classroom and tutoring in the mainstream classroom, monitoring work and assignments in the classroom.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

•Works with individual students and/or small groups in the ESL classroom.

•Tutors individual students in various subject areas.

•Assists in the registration of EL students.

•Assists in the administration of the English proficiency tests and other placement tests.

•Maintains student records and keeps current information and materials on file.

•Helps students learn about the school environment (fire drills, emergency procedures, etc.).

•Assists in the preparation of materials to support lessons.

•Assists in modifying tests and materials for mainstream teachers.

•Participates in training, workshops designed for ESL teaching assistants.

•Performs other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

•Knowledge and understanding of the developmental stages of children.

•Ability to operate and maneuver standard office equipment and specialized classroom equipment.

•Ability to provide a broad range of instructional assistance to teachers and others.

•Knowledge of grade appropriate competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of this position.

•Utilizes good interpersonal and customer service skills with staff, volunteers, parents, and students.

Job Qualification

Pay Grade 55 | Full-time | 10 Months | Minimum Monthly Salary $2,086

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

• Minimum: Either of the following:

High School Diploma/GED AND ability to pass a formal assessment (Work Keys-three assessments needed: Reading (4), Mathematics (4), Writing (3) and 96 hours of in-service training) OR Completion of the NC DOL apprenticeship Program OR Completion of the NC ATA Professional Development Plan.

Completion of an Associate's Degree or 48 college credit hours with a grade of "C" or better with concentration in Education or Early Childhood Development.

• Desirable: Associates Degree with a concentration in Education PLUS two years working with elementary age children. Proficiency (reading, writing, and speaking) in secondary language.
