General Statement of Duties:
This position requires knowledge and skills in the instruction of reading and writing and the ability to work with a variety of teachers and administrators in a collaborative coaching model. Literacy Coach responsibilities include coaching, lesson planning, modeling, and delivering research-based instructional strategies and interventions in literacy. Candidates must possess the ability to plan, organize, and coach instruction to meet individual and group needs utilizing state standards, division curriculum, and student data.

Essential Duties:
  • Serve as a middle school literacy leader, supporting teachers and administrators with the implementation of best practices in reading and writing
  • Provide professional development related to literacy for the district as well as schools
  • Support district curriculum and resource development
  • Assist with district and building level data analysis
  • Support the school-wide reading programs and the Division Literacy Plan
  • Develop formative and summative assessment, demonstrating knowledge of subject matter and using state Standards of Learning and the curriculum of the district
  • Support teachers in planning instruction for all students, demonstrating knowledge of literacy, and aligning instruction with the Virginia Standards of Learning and the division curriculum
  • Use district and school data to plan instruction
  • Engage in ongoing professional learning
  • Demonstrate current knowledge of research based best practices
  • Incorporate and model appropriate use of Technology to support instruction and student learning
  • Maintain a professional manner when interacting with all stakeholders
  • Perform other duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Possess a comprehensive understanding of intervention programs and strategies to support students and teachers in literacy instruction to meet individualized goals
  • Demonstrate the ability to plan, model, and deliver current research-based best practices and interventions in reading instruction and be able to assess student responsiveness to those interventions through analysis of observation and assessment data
  • Demonstrate the ability to lead planning meetings, model, and deliver current research-based best practices aligned with the Standards of Learning and analyze a variety of assessment data to determine the effectiveness of instruction
  • Work collaboratively with team members and serve as a liaison between teachers, school based administration, and middle school English Language Arts specialist
  • Master's Degree in Reading is required
  • Previous literacy coach or reading specialist experience preferred
  • Minimum of five years teaching experience is required


Additional Information:
The position has a 239-Day contract.
  • Master's Degree = minimum salary $57,564.11
