Job Description

Position Overview

At KIPP DC, we want to elevate the voices of families and students, both within the walls of their school building and in their larger community. This position will contribute to the development and execution of strategies and partnerships to deploy an aggressive community engagement and advocacy strategy to ensure every District of Columbia student can receive a quality public education.

The ideal candidate for this position will bring experience in DC governmental relations and local community engagement, strong relationships with local non-profits, community-based and social justice organizations, and be well-versed in key educational equity policy debates. The Director will collaborate with our KIPP DC communications team, policy team, and external organizing partners to help build civic capacity around bold approaches to address educational equity issues for KIPP DC specifically and DC public education in general.

The Director of Advocacy is an exempt position and will report to the Chief Community Engagement and Growth Officer. This position will also supervise the Sr. Manager of Student Advocacy and Sr. Manager of of Family Engagement and Support.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Advocacy and Community Engagement
  1. Actively cultivate and develop partnerships with community and national organizations with a focus on the DC education community, council members, and city leaders throughout Washington, DC to support all-school-aged children.
  2. Develop strategy and manage the execution of the policy, advocacy community and family engagement vision and goals of KIPP DC to ensure continuous collaboration between KIPP DC and the communities where our students and families reside.
  3. Develop and facilitate the implementation of projects highlighting KIPP DC's commitment to the community, being a valued neighbor and fostering schools that meet the needs of students and families.
  4. Become fluent in the range of policy solutions available to address educational inequities and systemic racism in public education.
  5. Develop and implement community-building and engagement plans and strategies to amplify the voices of parent and community supporters who advocate for student enrollment ceiling increases, per-pupil funding increases, charter school building acquisition and student safety in partnership with local organizing group.
  6. Manage the senior manager of student advocacy and oversee the execution of student engagement and advocacy initiatives.
  7. Manage the senior manager of family engagement and support and execution of family engagement initiatives.


  • Alumni Association Management
  1. Manage an alumni association to support the career and leadership development of over 637 KIPP DC alumni through professional mentorship, career advice, and networking opportunities.
  2. Strategically drive the ongoing increase in alumni engagement through volunteer opportunities, mentoring current students, KIPP DC growth advocacy and participation in alumni programs.
  3. Collaborate with the KIPP DC Alumni Council to engagement and support initiatives


  • Community Engagement Leadership
  1. Directly support Senior Manager of Family Support and Senior Manager of Student Advocacy, including planning for talent development, setting goals and vision around their work, and providing helpful feedback for growth and improvement.
  2. Support engagement in existing and future initiatives of KIPP DC's Strategic 2025 Plan in the area of community engagement and advocacy.
  3. Work with the Chief Community Engagement and Growth Officer to prioritize community engagement team projects, and the marketing and communications team to develop community focused narratives to execute advocacy strategies that confront specific educational inequities experienced by local education agencies (LEAs).
  4. Coordinate recurring team meetings and larger step-backs to promote cohesion and execution of programs and initiatives that support students, families, and communities.
  5. Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies


Qualifications

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree required. Graduate degree desired.
  • At least 5-7 years of experience in the public education
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Strong understanding of press strategies
  • Strong cultural competency skills, including the ability to communicate and work effectively and cultivate relationships with a diverse set of stakeholders
  • Passion for education reform and the belief that every child can succeed
  • Commitment to advancing KIPP DC's anti-racist ambition through their work with staff, students, alumni, and families
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills and an ability to take initiative, receive feedback, and seek out creative ideas
  • A proven track record of navigating complex issues, managing multiple stakeholders, making decisions, and driving strong results. The ability to work across teams and with diverse leaders is essential.
