POSITION: Director of College Readiness

REPORTS TO: Managing Director of College Intiatives

COMPENSATION: $68,907- $89,580


Across the nation, only half of all students from low-income communities graduate from high school and only 10% earn a college degree. Even though 89% of our students are economically disadvantaged, YES Prep provides evidence that different outcomes are possible. Eighty-three (83%) of YES Prep alumni matriculate to college within one year and alumni like Eddie Zapata are earning their college degrees at four times the rate of their peers with similar socioeconomic backgrounds. How do we do this? YES Prep has 21 campuses serving K-12, 19 campuses of those campuses serving 6th-12th graders, like Monique Bowie , and 2 of those being our newest elementary campuses . We will continue adding 2 elementary campuses per year until 2024. This allows us to serve even more families and provide access to a college preparatory mindset from a child's first school experience.

Houston is the 4th largest city and our increasing population translates into 2,000 families on YES Prep's waitlist. YES Prep's student enrollment is estimated to grow from 14,500+ students currently, to 23,000 by the 2024 - 2025 school year.


YES Prep needs a dynamic Director of College Readiness, with a diverse set of experiences to make our mission a reality. To put it simply, you will you play an integral role in supporting campuses meet college readiness goals and implement aligned seminar, advising, student opportunities, and family engagement programs.


When you join the YES Prep team, some of the exciting work and responsibilities will include:

  • Creating and executing the vision for 9 th -12 th grade college readiness at all YES Prep campuses that exemplifies our commitment to make college accessible and available for all and supporting all students pursuing all post-secondary pathways;

  • Designing and executing vision alongside campus College Initiatives teams for an equity-driven, values-based seminar, student opportunities, advising, and family engagement program;

  • Leading and facilitating the development of Directors of College Counseling, College Counselors, and Seminar Teachers across YES Prep through dynamic programming;

  • Creating a robust set of resources and materials to codify the work of campus College Initiatives teams and ensuring consistent implementation across all campuses;

  • Providing robust, strategic, targeted support to a cohort of priority campuses, alongside Program and Schools leadership teams;

  • Working with campus staff to ensure emerging campuses have the tools and knowledge to appropriately shape their college initiatives programs in their schools;

  • Driving?strategies?to increase organizational and departmental metrics related to college readiness including SAT, GPA, graduation requirements, and college application milestones;

  • Supporting Manager of Special Projects in planning and executing district-wide events including but not limited to: Graduation, the YES Prep College Fair, IMPACT programming, college visits, and spring trip along with supporting cross-functional events such as Senior Signing Day;

  • Collaborating with Director of Alumni Affairs to support campus teams to meet organization and campus matriculation goals;

  • Collaborating with key stakeholders in the Home Office to drive college readiness strategies in a cross-functional manner;

  • Maintaining positive and collaborative relationships with external stakeholders that support our college readiness program;

  • Additional duties as assigned.

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four-year educational institution

  • Knowledge of federal, state and local laws, policies, and procedures as it relates to student's progression towards graduation and post-secondary plans

  • Five to seven years of experience working with students and their families from low-income communities preferably in high school counseling and/or at an institution of higher education with demonstrable results, ability to apply data analysis and evaluation techniques, demonstrated expertise in the design and evaluation of curriculum service

  • Strong strategic planning skills and project management experience

  • Strong presentation skills

  • Ability to proactively monitor and adjust activities to respond to changing circumstances and priorities to meet goals

  • Previous management experience including responsibilities for hiring, training, assigning work and managing performance of staff

  • Belief in and commitment to the mission and core value of YES Prep Public Schools

  • Openness to giving and receiving frequent feedback

  • Ability to maintain emotional control under stress

  • Ability to work urgently in a fast-paced and results-oriented environment

  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks and initiatives at once

  • Director of College Counseling experience

  • Master's Degree in education or related field, preferred


  • Compensation -This position is an exempt, salaried position; salary offers commensurate with experience.

  • Health and Supplemental Insurance- A $10 monthly medical option that includes $600 towards a Health Savings Account, in addition to a variety of supplemental benefits including Dental, Vision, Disability, Life, etc. Employees must work 20+ hours a week to be eligible for a full spectrum of benefits, and 10 hours a week minimum for medical benefits.

  • Retirement Plans- Participation in Teacher Retirement System of Texas and a 457 Retirement Plan.

  • Paid Time Off- Employees working 20+ hours a week receive 10 days of Paid Time Off in addition to the system closures of our Academic Calendar . Please note, part-time hourly employees (working fewer than 40 hours/week) do not receive pay during system closures. Additionally, 10- and 11-month hourly employees do not receive pay during the months in which they are not working.

  • Paid Leave Programming- In the event you need to be out due to medical needs (including maternity and paternity leave), YES Prep offers paid leave, paid out at 100%, based on eligibility and tenure.
