    DESCRIPTION:
    Under the direction of the Director of Special Education, the Assistant Director of Special Education assists the Director in administering the special education programs and services of the East St Louis School District #189 and the East St Louis Area Joint Agreement

    Qualifications: Appropriate Illinois Certification Required:
    • Administrative Certificate with Director of Special Education Endorsement
    • Behavior Consultant ISBE compliance requirement
    • Masters Degree with a minimum of five years experience in school setting
    • Working knowledge and experience in positive research-based behavior intervention strategies
    • Experience supervising and managing a program and/or school for students with severe emotional disorders
    • Demonstrated skills in staff evaluation and group facilitation
    • Training in Crisis Prevention


    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    Knowledge of:
    • Federal and State statutes as it pertains to the education of students with disabilities
    • Knowledge of school finance procedures and understanding of special education funding Child find responsibilities and Evaluation procedures
    • General requirements for writing Individualized Education Programs
    • Eligibility criteria for students with disabilities
    • Disciplinary actions including Manifestation Determination Reviews and Due Process
    • Special Education administrative requirements and procedural safeguards, and policies and procedures


    Ability to:

    • Develop and maintain rapport and interpersonal relationships with students, teachers, parents, administrators, and other school personnel
    • Demonstrate ability to respect differing opinions, seek and accept constructive criticism and handle conflict
    • Comply with timelines for reporting special education data and other assigned tasks
    • Maintain confidentiality with highly sensitive information Demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills

    DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES (May not include all duties performed)
  • Assist in the review of FACTS data prior to each transmission to ISBE to ensure accuracy in reporting Assists district administration in the supervision of district special education personnel and programs as requested
  • Supports other special education departmental staff as needed
  • Coordinate departmental meetings on a monthly basis
  • Address parent and/or staff complaints and attempt to resolve problems
  • Make sound decisions based upon complete information gathered from pertinent sources Serves as the primary coordinator of the Dynamic Learning Maps-Alternative Assessment Other duties as assigned by the Director of Special Education

  • WORKING CONDITIONS:

    The employee is required to sit, stand, walk and use the computer. Reading and making reports are required. Daily travel is required between buildings and offices. The employee must frequently synthesize complex material and make recommendations.
