Essex Westford School District is seeking dedicated, high energy candidates to serve as full-time Student Supervision Specialists at Essex Elementary School and Founders Memorial School beginning in the 2021-2022 school year. Ideal candidates will be skilled in de-escalation strategies and have prior experience working with children, preferably in large group settings.

Job duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Assist in transporting children with specialized needs to and from school for the District
  • Assist in maintaining behavior norms
  • Coordinate playground activities and manage the cafeteria and playground environment to be conducive to eating and socializing
  • Resolve student behavior conflicts using de-escalation strategies
  • Attends to students experiencing difficulties or engaging in inappropriate behavior
  • Utilize positive behavioral strategies to encourage positive behavior and address misbehavior. Implement behavioral intervention plans as developed by school staff
  • Provide substitute coverage for other paras for break coverage and/or for partial coverage during absences. Provide front office coverage as needed/requested
  • Provide general administrative support to classroom teachers
  • Take part in in-service training programs, as appropriate
Candidates with the following qualifications are encouraged to apply:
  • Basic education (high school or equivalent), plus one to two years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired
  • Good communication skills and the ability to speak clearly to and deal courteously and efficiently with students, staff, and supervisors
  • Demonstrated abilities and personal qualities needed to work effectively with children and adolescents with special needs, and a desire to work with this population
  • First aid and CPR training, and additional relevant health service training or experience desirable
  • Effectively be able to manage student behavior issues in a calm and respectful manner; well skilled at de-escalation strategies
