General Statement of Duties

Family Advocates serve as school-based support staff committed to building resource rich school communities, bridging high impact partnerships and collaborations, and boosting transformative family engagement. The Family Advocate helps parents understand their role as full partners in their child's education and serves as a community connector in this process.
This position will be housed at the Central Office Fairfield Annex location.
This is an 8-hour per day, 220-day position (10 months). The minimum annual salary for this position is $28,804.85. State date of position is August 23, 2021. Posting is open until filled. Location of assignment will vary among schools.

Essential Duties

• Serves as an advocate for all families and children in designated school communities.
  
• Assist parents in enhancing skills (examples: parent education classes, ESL classes, computer and Technology classes, and adult classes) for the purpose of being actively involved in their child's education.
  
• Identifies families and students in need of additional support(s) and works in collaboration with support staff to meet assessed needs
  
• Assist parents with transportation to school appointments when applicable
  
• Becomes familiar with program policies and procedures and service area plans.
  
• Assists with recruitment and enrollment.
  
• Provide family crisis intervention as needed with assistance of other program staff.
  
• Identify and connect with community partners to support the school community
  
• Organizes and facilitates workshops (e.g. day, evening, and/or weekends) for the purpose of providing information, resources, and support to parents enhancing their overall parenting skills in the school and community.
  
• Collaborates with others to promote and ensure the importance of parent involvement with school personnel for the purpose of providing effective methods and tools for working with parents as equal partners.
  
• Communicates with parents, teachers, principals, and community organizations for the strengthening parent/school/community relationships.
  
• Maintain ongoing contact with teaching staff through class visits, email, telephone, etc., in order to share relevant information and gain information regarding child performance in the classroom.
  
• Conducts and supports home visits for the purpose of enhancing appropriate parenting skills related to the academic success of their students.
  
• Actively encourages parents to participate in parent meetings, field trips, etc.
  
• Encourages parent-initiated school contacts (examples: PTA, PTO, Parent Volunteerism, and Parent Teacher Conferences) for the purpose of involving the parent as an active participant in their child's education.
  
• Informs parents of community-based educational opportunities for the purpose of providing additional academic support beyond the regular school day.
  
• Works with the attendance team to support parents/families with establishing and maintaining regular attendance for their child.
  
• Participates in staff development activities and professional growth opportunities.
  
• Supports the Family and Community Engagement department with initiatives and outreach as needed.
  
• Supports the initiatives and goals of the designated school community.
  
• Performs other duties as assigned.
  

Minimum Qualifications

A minimum of twenty-four (24) college credit hours in Education, Human Services, Social Work or related field and willingness to continue training. A minimum of 3-5 years of experience working with children in academic settings, parents/families as support, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Ability to work as an advocate for at-promise families and children in historically marginalized communities. Must have skills in communicating, problem solving, organizing, interpersonal relationships, programming and decision-making or any equivalent combination of experience and training which would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Self-motivated. Hours may be flexible.

A valid Virginia Driver's license. HCPS reserves the right to waive one or more of the listed job requirements when in the best interest of the school system. Additional languages may be considered a plus, particularly if they align with the needs of a school.

The incumbent will have a responsibility of providing transportation to students and/or families under certain circumstances. Applicants selected for an interview MUST provide a copy of their DMV driving record on their interview date.
