Job Details

Allentown City*

Allentown was founded in 1762 as a small village of Pennsylvania Dutch settlers and remained such until the Industrial Revolution.  By the 1850’s and 1860’s, Allentown’s strong local iron industry was fueling the growth of the nation’s railroads.  The turn of the 20th century brought silk mills to the centrally located city, as well as the production of furniture, beer, and cigars.  Since World War II, Allentown has undergone another transition due to the decline of manufacturing and the rise of the service economy.  Spurred by state passage of the Neighborhood Improvement Zone legislation, Allentown received more than $1 billion in new and planned development.  The city’s infrastructure offers state-of-the-art technology, innovative architecture, and inventive government/private partnerships which all play a role in attracting businesses and residents to the downtown district.

Allentown School District
Allentown School District is located in Lehigh County in northeast Pennsylvania and consists of approximately 17,000 students in 15 elementary schools, 4 middle schools and 3 high schools.  As the third-largest school district in the state, the leaders of the Allentown School District are committed to continuous improvement, equity aligned with outcomes, authentic community engagement, and the responsibility of preparing all students for college or career.

The CORE VALUES** of the Allentown School District are to commit to excellence, partnership, and equity by:

  • Honoring each student’s unique qualities
  • Ensuring equity of access and opportunities
  • Nurturing the pursuit of lifelong learning
  • Strengthening partnerships with families and communities
  • Promoting cultural responsiveness
  • Building trust and mutual respect

The THEORY OF ACTION**  for the Allentown School District is set in the belief that if those involved in the schools cultivate a culture in which students feel safe, valued, and nurtured; center the district’s work on personalized learning and instruction; collaborate meaningfully and deeply with families and communities; create and expect organizational effectiveness and accountability; and calibrate leadership and learning at all levels; then, ASD students will graduate college and career ready with the skills necessary to explore and pursue post-secondary options that lead to success in work and life.

The Position
The Board of Directors is seeking highly qualified candidates for the position of superintendent of schools to commence on or around November 1, 2021. This initial announcement will be supplemented by a Leadership Profile that will consist of expected characteristics, required qualifications, and experience. The Leadership Profile is being developed by the Board for posting on or about June 30, 2021.

Minimally, applicants must have multiple-year, successful, executive-level, educational leadership experience in a district of comparable size and scope. Experience in communities with similar educational values and expectations is highly desirable. Candidates must possess or be immediately eligible for a Pennsylvania Department of Education letter of eligibility 90 (Superintendent, IU Executive Director).

A multi-year contract will be offered with a salary in the range of $240,000 per annum subject to negotiation based on qualifications and experience.
