The Office of Innovation and Accountability team develops and delivers data-focused solutions to support school improvement and better inform decisions across the Providence Public School District (PPSD). If we're successful, all stakeholders working with and for our students will have the right data at the right time to make decisions in those students' best interests.

The Data Engineer will be responsible for improving the district's data infrastructure to support critical decisions made by school and system leaders. They will design and maintain the data warehouse in partnership with colleagues and partners and build sustainable data pipelines between the warehouse, select information systems, and various reporting and analysis tools. This critical work will ensure timely, accurate data are at the fingertips of decision-makers across the district.

The Data Engineer will also play a key role in coordinating data governance across the Office of Innovation and Accountability and various instructional, programmatic and policy teams. The applicant will develop and train others on administrative procedures for uniform data collection and management to improve the quality and utilization of data for decision making across the district.

This position reports to PPSD's Executive Director of Accountability and Innovation.

Roles & Responsibilities
  • Create and troubleshoot ETL (extract, transform, load) scripts in SQL and Python programming languages that process student data across systems, including Skyward, the district's student information systemProactively monitor data pipelines for completeness and accuracy, communicating with impacted stakeholders to resolve issues when they are identifiedMaintain the district's data warehouse and reporting platform in partnership with vendorsDevelop, test, and maintain database architectures to ensure data integrity standards are metPartner with others to develop a data governance process for PPSD's data warehouse to ensure all tables, fields, and ETL pipelines are well documented, source systems have clear owners and lines of accountability, and can be maintained over the long-termMaintain the district's data dictionary for key data elements describing the contents, format, and structure of the data warehouse and the relationship between its elementsCreate research-ready datasets and dashboard-ready database views through manipulation and analysis of data across the data warehouseConsult business owners across PPSD to identify data and reporting needs, develop recurring reports to meet those needs, and connect applications owned by those teams to the data warehouse.Perform maintenance and support tasks on the reporting platform, Tableau ServerWork with data team to increase capacity for data analysisRespond to requests from data team to resolve any issues related to integration failures or errorsAssist data analysts in developing SQL queries for reporting and analysisSupport in identifying, designing, and implementing internal process improvements: automating manual processes, optimizing data delivery, re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability, etc.Assume other duties as may from time to time be delegated by supervisor.

Salary Rate Range
$92,168 - $109,680

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree with a concentration or coursework in computer science, information technology, or a related field from an accredited college or university.Between 5 and 7 years of work experience in database design, architecture, and ETL pipeline development.

Qualifications

  • Specific experience in database design and architecture.Specific experience querying and managing SQL databases.Specific experience in Python or one other scripting language (R, Javascript, etc.) required.Knowledge and skill in developing, maintaining and using data sets of various size and complexity.Experience with reporting and dashboarding tools, such as Tableau.Expert knowledge of Microsoft Excel and other Office applications.Familiarity with educational measurement, including formative and summative assessments and surveys.Excellent quantitative thinking, including the ability to examine available data, apply decision rules and analytical methods and produce meaningful results.Strong attention to detail and a fundamental concern for the accuracy of information, including the ability to organize large amounts of data and track multiple projects simultaneously.Passionate commitment to improving public education and accelerating achievement among underserved students.Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism.History of realizing exceptional outcomes under time and resource constraints and in times of ambiguity.Outstanding project management skills - ability to see the big picture and to manage details.Exceptional problem-solving, critical thinking, and planning skills.Strong written and oral communication skills.You must complete the new hire compliance training prior to your first day of employmentBilingual PreferredSelected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
