TITLE:

High School Assistant Boys' Basketball Coach

QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Experience is preferred, but is not required
  2. Good communication and organizational skills
  3. Ability to positively and professionally motivate and engage student-athletes
  4. Current or be able to obtain First Aide, CPR and AED certification prior to coaching student-athletes
  5. Qualify for district transportation certification to transport student-athletes
  6. Qualify for CHSAA Certification and complete prior to coaching student-athletes
  7. Qualify for Archuleta School District 50 Joint employment based on a background check
  8. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the board may find appropriate and acceptable


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The work requires periods of light to medium physical activity and requires long periods of time standing and/or walking. Most of the work requires the physical demands of coaching the fundamentals of basketball.

REPORTS TO:

Pagosa Springs High School Head Boys' Basketball Coach, Assistant Principal/Athletic Director, and Principal; or person designated by the Board or the superintendent

JOB GOAL:

To assist the Head Basketball Coach with organizing the high school basketball program and to assist with conducting practices, motivating students, and instructing student athletes in game strategies and techniques.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Holds students accountable to the information provided in the PSHS Student-Athlete and Activity Handbook.
  2. Assists the Head Coach in instructing players, individually or in groups, regarding the rules, regulations, equipment, and techniques of the sport of basketball.
  3. Works with basketball players during practices and games to assist the Head Coach in assessing player's skills and assigning team positions.
  4. Observes players, during competition and practice to determine the needs for individual or team improvement.
  5. Coaches a sub-varsity level basketball team under the direction of the Head Coach.
  6. Assists the Head Coach with proper supervision of players at all times.
  7. Follows established procedures in the event of an athlete's injury.
  8. Follows state, regional, and district regulations governing the sport of basketball.
  9. Models positive sportsmanship and maintains appropriate conduct towards players, officials, and spectators.
  10. Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
  11. Assists the Head Coach with a summer basketball camp.
  12. Assists the Head Coach with a summer basketball program that may include weight training, skill development, game competition, and physical conditioning.
  13. Attends staff development meetings, clinics, and other professional activities to improve coaching performance.
  14. Participates in special activities that may include senior night, team dinners, end of the year banquet, award nights, and pep assemblies.
  15. Participates in a school-wide student-athlete character development program.
  16. Other duties as assigned by the Head Coach, Athletic Director and/or Principal.


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Salary: Based upon District adopted High School Athletics Volunteer Assistant Coaches Salary Schedule: $3,185 per school year. Additional pay for Longevity, Number of Athletes, Final Four, State Championship, Extended Season and Academics.

Work Schedule: As designated by the CHSAA sports seasons, the Athletic Director and the Head Coach

EVALUATION:

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on athletic evaluation.
