About Woodlands Woodlands School, founded in 1936, has been a public charter school through the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee since 2003. It currently enrolls more than 600 students in grades K4 through eighth grade at two campus sites in a multi-aged learning environment, Bluemound and State Street. The curriculum centers around “The Woodlands Way” which is a character-based education approach that helps a diverse population of students recognize and develop strong and positive values. Summary (or Purpose)

 The Special Education Teaching Assistant will assist the special education teacher with delivering curriculum to students in grades K4 – 8th and presenting subject matter to students using lectures, discussions, or supervised role-playing methods. They will tutor and assist children individually or in small groups in order to help them master material and to reinforce learning concepts presented by teachers. The incumbent will provide full support to classroom management and oversee the safety of students.

Position

This position is part of our Special Education Department which promotes the inclusion of students with disabilities in our multi-aged classrooms. Our Independent Public Charter school's philosophy emphasizes that the involvement of people of many races and cultures and abilities enriches the growth of human understanding. Education founded on these beliefs gives rise to both a happy, sensitive, creative child and an adult who, while intellectually free, is morally and socially responsible. This is the underlying philosophy for our students with disabilities as well.

Essential Responsibilities

Special Education instructors are an active member of the school community in helping educate pupils with disabilities. The incumbent will work with children ranging from K4- 8th grade.

● Share co-teaching responsibilities with special education and general education teachers in the areas of assessment, instruction and implementation.

● Tutor and assist children individually or in small groups in order to help them master material and to reinforce learning concepts presented by teachers.

● Supervise students in classrooms, halls, cafeterias, school yards, and gymnasiums, or on field trips.

● Additional duties within the building such as car pool supervision, etc.

● Help prepare lesson materials, bulletin board displays, exhibits, equipment, and demonstrations.

● Build strong relationships with students and families.

● Help implement student IEPs with fidelity.

● Monitor and report progress toward IEP

Goals and Objectives

 ● Complete all activities required for compliance with IDEA

● Assist with the submission of required reports and documentation to the administration to maintain date compliance with DPI

● Demonstrate thorough knowledge of special education policies and procedures as well as the ability to fulfill them

● Demonstrate knowledge of basic computer skills including, but not limited to Google Suite: (Meets, Classroom, Document, Sheets)

● Supports students and parents with student placement, curriculum and instructional issues

● Develop positive, collaborative relationships with teaching staff, students, other staff members and parents

● Attend team meetings with both general education teacher teams and special education teacher teams.

● Assist students, according to IEP, who require support with self care, such as toileting or feeding.

● Help support special education students during the de-escalation process

Minimum Requirements

● Associates Degree – OR – 48 College credits

● Experience working with children

● Special education teacher assistant license (from DPI)

Reporting Structure

The Teaching Assistant position reports directly to the building principal.

● Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Compensation:

● Full benefits package available with includes, medical, dental and eye care. 10.5 month position

● Hourly salary $15/ hour

● Eight paid holidays
