ABOUT OUR DISTRICT:

The Syracuse City School District is undergoing a new phase of innovation and transformation with the goal of ensuring that all students graduate high school with the skills needed to be ready for college and career. For Syracuse, all means all - including students who fall behind or have been considered "hard to serve" for a host of reasons. The School Board and Syracuse community have charged Superintendent Jaime Alicea with improving student achievement, and he is seeking a dedicated and diverse team of school leaders and teachers to partner with him in moving the district toward its goals. The Syracuse City School District represents 34 schools and 4 alternative education programs, serving 21,000+ students Pre-K-12 of whom 77% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, 18% are served by the Office of Special Education and 78% are students of color.

ABOUT THIS ROLE:

The Secondary Lead Teacher is the leader of a model classroom for a grade level and/or a course. Their classroom is open for other teachers and administrators to observe the SCSD curriculum and priorities enacted with excellence. The Secondary Lead Teacher works collaboratively with other Lead Teachers, Content Directors, Supervisors and Coaches to plan for and develop resources to be used across the district. Lead Teachers may also develop and deliver professional development and provide consultations and support to other teachers. This position requires the modeling of best practices in instruction, personalized learning, culturally responsive education and social emotional learning.

The Secondary Lead Teachers teaches students directly for 60% (or 3/5 of the periods) of the time. This 40% release position requires the modeling of best practices in instruction, using the curriculum, resources and priorities supported by SCSD. These demonstration lessons and corresponding resources will be filmed and posted on Canvas, the District learning management system for secondary grades. The weekly professional learning will support each week's lessons posted to Canvas.

There will be 32 Middle School Secondary Lead Teachers across the district for the following courses in grades 6-8:

  • Grade 7 Math
  • Grade 8 Math
  • Grade 6 Science
  • Grade 7 Science
  • Grade 8 Science

  • ENL


There will be 20 High School Secondary Lead Teachers across the district for grades 9-12:
  • ELA 9,10,11,12
  • Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, Modeling with Math, Statistics, Proofs with Geometry (supports middle school Regents courses, too)
  • Living Environment, Earth Science, Chemistry, Physics (supports middle school Regents courses, too)
  • Early World History, Global History, US History, Active Citizenship
  • Spanish 1, Spanish 2 (supports middle school Regents courses, too)


REPORTS TO: Director of Professional Development and Content Supervisors

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Planning and Preparation
    • Set high expectations of achievement that are ambitious and measurable for all students
    • Work collaboratively with Content Supervisors and Directors to set direction, producing resources, lessons, tools, and materials, that clarify content and teaching methods for teachers to use.
    • Utilize best practices in teaching and learning:
      • Design lessons and structures that engage students and increase learning capacity
      • Design instruction that is enriched (developing higher-order thinking skills) and personalized (reflecting learning levels and interests of individual students)
      • Design assessments that accurately assess student progress
      • Film lessons for each content area every week
      • Design and develop professional development to effectively use lessons and resources each week
  • Classroom Environment
    • Hold students accountable for high expectations of behavior and engagement that are ambitious and measurable
    • Create classroom environments conducive to collaborative and individual learning
    • Establish a culture of respect, enthusiasm, and positive rapport
  • Professional Responsibilities
    • Integrate culturally responsive instruction into learning environments
    • Maintain regular communication with teachers, and work collaboratively with them to design learning
    • Organize and schedule professional development sessions to ensure instructional alignment and pacing for effective delivery in all classrooms
    • Model instructional practices (lesson planning, large-group instruction, small-group instruction, interventions, data analysis, etc.) among teachers based on teacher strengths, content knowledge, and professional development goals
    • Provide support regarding personalized learning and social-emotional strategies.


QUALIFICATIONS
  • Demonstrate a growth mindset and willingness to adapt and take risks
  • Minimum of five years' full-time classroom teacher experience in urban school environment
  • Possess a Master's Degree in education or related field.
  • Prior evidence of high-progress student outcomes and high-yield instructional strategies
  • Prior evidence of excellent remote instruction-structures, procedures, and routines
  • Demonstrate effective relationships with people who have differing cultural backgrounds and/or personal characteristics, including race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or economic differences. Preference given for experience working successfully with those of similar demographics to the desired school placement.
  • Training and/or experience with Culturally Relevant Education (preferred)
  • All candidates must possess New York State teacher certification in their subject area, or qualify to obtain it by the first date of employment. Licensed teachers from other states may qualify for reciprocity. We encourage candidates with ENL or SPED educational backgrounds to apply.
  • Prior demonstration of exemplary attendance is expected of any candidate for hire.
  • Please note that New York State requires a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.5 for certification, and one hired, this proof will be kept on file in the Office of Human Resources.

SALARY/SALARY RANGE:
  • This position will earn a stipend of,
    • $5,000 for Lead teachers who are released for 2 periods a day
    • $7,500 for Lead teachers who teach a full schedule

,in addition to the current starting salary of $48,500 for SCSD Teachers according to the Unit 1 collective bargaining agreement. With proof of outside, related experience and college transcripts, the salary will be increased pursuant to the Unit 1 contractual agreement.
