Job Summary
The Unassigned Custodian maintains clean floors, furniture, fixtures, and grounds in Anchorage School District schools. The unassigned custodian reports needed repairs and monitors the building for safety while also securing the building at the end of the day. This position is not assigned to a single location but travels between locations as needed. The position has a retirement association with the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).

Job Requirements
The following are required:
  1. A high school diploma or equivalent. Two years of related work experience may be considered in lieu of the education requirement.
  2. Some experience related to custodial work.
  3. Must have the ability to read and interpret documents such as Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
  4. Must be able to work any shift, including the morning shift beginning at 6:30 am, the evening shift beginning at 12:30 pm, or the night shift beginning at 3:30 pm.
  5. A current Alaska driver's license.
  6. Must be able to travel to any location within the Anchorage School District as needed, from Girdwood School to Mirror Lake Middle School and any in between.
  7. Must have reliable transportation to get to and from work, as well as be able to travel between locations during a single shift, as necessary.
  8. Must have the ability to reach with hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  9. The Anchorage School District requires that the selected applicant for this position be given a conditional offer of employment contingent upon successfully passing a post offer/pre-employment physical capacities assessment. The following are preferred:
  1. Six months of successful responsible custodial experience.
  2. Knowledge of the safe and effective use of common electrical cleaning equipment.
  3. Skill for efficient use of time, motion, tools, equipment, and supplies to produce quality work on time.
  4. Ability to use simple math and dilution ratios to properly dilute concentrated chemicals.
  5. Ability to learn ASD methods of cleaning and materials used in custodial work.
  6. Ability to do heavy manual work.
  7. Ability to work independently.

Essential Job Functions
  1. Sweeps vacuums, mops, scrubs, and refinishes (to include waxing) floor surfaces.
  2. Dusts, washes, and waxes furniture and fixtures.
  3. Cleans restroom toilet bowls, sinks, walls, etc.
  4. Assists in securing the facility before exiting, including turning out lights and locking doors and windows.
  5. Watches the building to prevent vandalism or damage by persons authorized or unauthorized to be in the facility or on the grounds.
  6. Reports the need for repairs to facility fixtures or custodial equipment to proper authorities for necessary repairs.
  7. Operates electrical custodial equipment safely and effectively and cleans this equipment after use.
  8. Safely and effectively works with different chemicals such as detergents, disinfectants, and sanitizers.
  9. Shampoos carpeting by various methods such as bonnet, encapsulation, steam, etc. Spot cleans carpets as necessary.
  10. Performs heavy lifting while moving equipment, chemicals, furniture, etc., as necessary.
  11. Maintains school grounds by removing paper, cans, and other trash from the school grounds on a daily basis.
  12. Clears building sidewalks by sweeping and/or removing snow for activities/evening access. Clears a path to dumpster for safety of trash removal as needed.

Physical /Mental Demands
The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.

Work is performed in a professional environment with a wide variety of individuals having differing functions, personalities and abilities, including working with diverse groups of people in a variety of different settings.

While performing the duties of this job the employee may be regularly exposed to a video display. The employee may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
