POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Director of Recovery Strategy & Special Projects is responsible for overseeing and project-managing KIPP DC's COVID recovery investments and priorities, as well as coordinating and documenting organization-wide efforts to reimagine and rebuild KIPP DC schools after the pandemic. The director is specifically responsible for ensuring that KIPP DC receives and is compliant with all appropriate federal and local funding related to the pandemic. This role will coordinate efforts cross-functionally without managing any of the activities directly, and instead lead the overall recovery program. This role requires strong attention to strategy, implementation, efficacy, and effectiveness, and must be a compelling external steward of KIPP DC's recovery efforts.

This role is an exempt position and will report to the Vice President of Advancement, with strong coordination with leadership from the Finance, Accounting, and Instructional Leadership teams. This role is planned and scoped through June 2023 - ongoing need will be evaluated in the Spring of 2023.

Job Description

General program support and oversight
  • Point person for understanding, communicating, and ensuring compliance for organizational recovery framework
  • Lead cross-functional coordination of recovery program, including coordination points with Finance, Accounting, Development, Procurement, and HR teams
  • Work directly with program and initiative leads to understand efficacy of investments, including problem solving when needed
  • Generate comprehensive monthly progress reports on all active programs and initiatives related to recovery to KIPP DC's executive team, board of directors, and external partners and authorizers (OSSE, DC Public Charter School Board, Council of the District of Columbia, etc.)
  • Work closely with the Brand team, HDQ team leaders, and school leaders to communicate progress and foster an organizational culture of innovation and improvement


Maximize funding
  • Research and understand potential sources of funding and summarize for relevant stakeholders (e.g., Accounting, Finance, Development, Procurement, and programs); build and maintain strategy for maximizing sources of funds
  • Working with Finance team, analyze short and long-term forecasting to identify list of potential uses for federal sources of funding
  • Work with each individual program lead to develop processes to maximize funding while reducing the administrative burden of tracking and reimbursement (ongoing and annually for the budgeting process)
  • Maintain accurate and timely invoicing for a variety of federal grants and programs, including: ESSER II and ARP ESSER
  • Acquire and maintain sound knowledge and understanding of KIPP DC; use that knowledge and understanding to better help KIPP DC's Development team identify other public grant opportunities
  • Coordinate the development of federal grant applications for COVID relief funding, including writing substantial portions of these applications; work with programmatic teams to ensure grant proposals accurately reflect instructional and programmatic goals and approaches; work with finance and programmatic teams to develop budget portions of grant proposals

Ensure compliance
  • Analyze grant agreement commitments and help ensure programs funded by public money (e.g., ESSER II and ARP ESSER) comply with all commitments
  • Organize and conduct periodic grant performance and administrative compliance reviews
  • Help ensure contract and procurement processes involving public grant money are compliant with commitments linked to funding
  • Staying informed on all updated laws and regulations, making sure all company operations are within the scope of those laws
  • Act as conduit between Accounting team and program to ensure compliance and reporting
  • Act as conduit between Procurement team and program to ensure compliance
  • Coordinate with outsourced accounting partner on ensuring compliance and accuracy
  • Ensure that all teams have completed all required paperwork to ensure the organization's submissions are intact and in good standing
  • Coordinate the development of progress reports, as required by grant agreements, in coordination with the Development team
  • Report project and program milestones for federally funded programs
  • Maintain strong relationships with funding agency and program officers
  • Work with Finance and Accounting teams to maximize and fully utilize funding and prepare for annual budget process and any potential audits


Assess program and initiative efficacy
  • Work with program leads on initiating and setting goals for organizational programs and initiatives going back to SY21
  • Support program leads in reaching goals by clearly outlining gaps in current performance to team members
  • Maintain consistent communication with teams regarding their progress towards grant target, including budget and spend
  • Track internal and any externally generated goals and outcomes, and communicate out to relevant stakeholders (as needed)
  • Create and maintain common comparison method for program and initiatives efficacy, including a way to compare investment and outcomes


Strategic project management & team responsibilities
  • Provide project management of specific special projects that arise as part of KIPP DC's recovery efforts and 2025 strategic priorities or initiatives without a clear functional owne
  • Participate in KIPP DC and advancement team activities, including staff meetings, professional development conferences and retreats, fundraising events, and other public relations opportunities.


Qualifications

IDEAL QUALIFICATIONS AND CHARACTERISTICS:
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • 7-10 years of professional experience managing complex projects and stakeholder groups
  • 2+ years of federal grants experience required
  • 2+ years of team management or cross-functional coordination experience preferred
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to build trusting relationships with various stakeholders
  • Strong Excel and PowerPoint skills
  • Strong, team player and possession of customer service orientation. Solutions-oriented.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, non-profit environment
  • Passion for education reform and the belief that every child can succeed
