SCOPE OF WORK:

Under the direction of the assigned supervisor, assist a certificated teacher in providing instruction to individuals or small groups of students in an assigned educational program; assist the student(s) with meeting the goals and objectives of their Individualized Education Plan (IEP); attend to the physical and health needs of students; monitor and report student progress regarding educational performance; perform a variety of clerical and supportive duties related to classroom activities and classroom management.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Support the developmental growth of each student:

1. Facilitate student's engagement in play activities by asking students open-ended questions about their activity and offering suggestions to add more complex materials and ideas.
2. Facilitate language development by describing to students their activity as well as the adult's activity as they are happening.
3. Use motivation/positive behavior management technique.
4. Understand young student, their behaviors, and motivation.

Work Collaboratively with Teaching Team:

1. Assist professional staff in supervising students across environments
2. Assist professional staff in the maintenance and operation of classrooms by prepping materials and classroom for daily activities
3. Assist professional staff with the collation, collating, and recording of data

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

• Minimum Required: At least two years of post-secondary education or successful completion of the Praxis exam.
• Preferred: Coursework in Early Childhood or related field (i.e. psychology, education, human development, etc.); Associate or Bachelor's degree.

Experience:

• Minimum Required: Experience working with students aged birth to 6 is preferred but not required.
• Preferred: Experience working with students that have special needs.

The working conditions of this position include:

1. The work environment is a regular office, classroom, outdoor, community preschool, or other school settings.
2. Occasional exposure to weather extremes.
3. Ability to tolerate extremes in noise levels.
4. Strength and stamina to safely restrain a student

SALARY:

As per the Master Agreement between the Burlington Board of School Commissioners and the Paraeducators of the Burlington School District.
