Position Purpose

The counselor's role is that of a student advocate and helping students achieve academic, personal and interpersonal success.

Position Purpose
Counselors assist students in attaining their maximum personal and educational development by offering a variety of support services including individual and group counseling, testing interpretation, development and monitoring of students' academic programs; consultation and collaboration with students, parents, faculty, administration, and the development student and parent informational programs. The counselor's role is that of a student advocate and helping students achieve academic, personal and interpersonal success.
Essential Responsibilities
- Serves as a member of the interdisciplinary team, and participates on the Pupil Study Team, Student Assistance Team, Pupil Personnel Team and conducts and formalizes student's 504 meetings and plans.
- Plans and implements activities supporting goal setting, reflection and planning for the future.
- Supports students' academic performance by reviewing progress reports and report cards and planning interventions when appropriate.
- Consults and collaborates with teachers, staff and parents in understanding and meeting the needs of students in the school setting and enhancing their education.
- Encourages student participation in study groups, test preparation and homework clubs.
- Participates in professional learning experiences to continually update their knowledge and skills.
- Provides individual planning sessions to students in the areas of academic planning and success, career awareness and social/emotional development.
- Plans and coordinates programs such as career and college fairs, financial aid, scholarships, and other extensions of the counseling curriculum.
- Coordinates parent education programs to assist students in making a smooth transition from elementary to middle school, middle school to the high school and in planning post high school options.
- Uses data to document the results of strategies and interventions that are used to improve student performance.
- Identifies at-risk students and collaborates with teachers and other professional staff to create appropriate interventions and recommendations.
- Coordinates and conducts school wide activities that contributes to the social emotional or academic goals of the school community.
- Reviews and implements modifications, accommodations, and intervention plans for all students both general and special education
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Demonstrate knowledge of state and federal laws pertaining to school counseling.
- Adheres to preferred practices prescribed by state and national school counselor associations.
- Ability to operate and function with a wide range of student personalities and backgrounds.
- Educated in various models of teaching and best practices of counseling.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to utilize a learning management system to interact with and engage students.
- Ability to organize and coordinate work.
- Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
Equipment

Qualifications Profile :
Certification/License
- CT State professional educator certification as a School Counselor (068) or Guidance Counselor (066, 067)
- Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to assignment.
- Master's Degree from an accredited college or university in a School Counseling program of studies
