Job Summary
The senior director of Communications and Community Outreach directs a comprehensive communications program to support the Anchorage School District's mission and goals. The senior director's duties include providing strategic communications counsel to ASD staff, developing and supervising communication plans and programs, leading a team through each facet of internal and external communications, and maintaining productive relationships with community stakeholders. This position frequently requires duties outside of the business day. The position has a retirement association with the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).

Job Requirements
The following are required:
  1. A bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or English. Equivalent work experience may be considered in lieu of the degree requirement.A minimum of seven years progressively responsible experience in public relations.

The following are preferred:
  1. Accreditation in Public Relations (APR) certified.Thorough knowledge and experience with the principles and practices of public relations, marketing, and journalism.Superior written, oral, and interpersonal skills.Experience leading and managing professional, technical, and clerical staff.Ability to communicate effectively with management, personnel, community members, and the media.Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.Experience with budget development and management.Experience with crisis management.Demonstrated experience advising senior leadership.Knowledge of state, local, and national legislative systems.Ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with others.Ability to function successfully in a stressful work environment.Knowledge of the public education system and commitment to the mission of public education.

Essential Job Functions
  1. Develops and directs a comprehensive communications program to support the Anchorage School District's mission and goals.Serves as a member of the superintendent's senior team.Provides strategic communications counsel to ASD and school administrators and other staff members.Develops and directs crisis communications plans.Develops and manages internal communications programs.Develops communications initiatives that engage diverse internal and external stakeholders.Develops public relations policies and procedures.Ensures successful application of ASD brand and image standards.Develops and manages department budget.Supervises departmental staff.

Physical /Mental Demands
The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.

Work Environment
Work is performed in a professional environment with a wide variety of individuals having differing functions, personalities and abilities, including working with diverse groups of people in a variety of different settings.

While performing the duties of this job the employee may be regularly exposed to a video display. The employee may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
