Job Description: Young & Woods Elementary School
The teacher assistant reports directly to the Principal and works under the guidance and supervision of the principal or his designee. The teacher assistant maintains a cooperative staff relationship with all personnel functioning within the educational setting .
Roles & Responsibilities:
The duties of the teacher assistant encompass a broad spectrum and include but are not limited to the following:
1. Participate in daily and long-range lesson and classroom activity planning.
2. Conduct learning exercises with small groups of students.
3. Guide students in developing positive relationships with peers and adults.
4. Assisting with the supervision as well as actively engaging with the children in the classroom, corridors, school yards, lavatories, cafeterias, etc... and on field trips.
5. Alert the teacher to special needs of individual students.
6. Collecting and distributing educational materials.
7. With teacher supervision, correct students' work and prescribe additional work to remediate student's weaknesses.
8. Operating machines which duplicate or copy information for distribution to pupils.
9. Assisting the teacher to meet the many personal and physical needs of the child.
10. Under teacher supervision, participate in discipline procedure and prescribe consequences for student behavior.
11. Assist teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing behavior or academic skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities.
12. Serve as the chief source of information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher.
13. Commit to attend ongoing professional development sessions; such as those offered by RIDE, the Providence School Department, and Local Union 1033.
14. Perform additional teacher assistant duties as requested.
15. Assist with toileting of the children in the classroom. This includes the changing of diapers and following a toileting routine.
16. Supervise and sit with children during the children's lunch. Engaging in conversation with the children.
17. Assist with collecting observational data regarding the children's progress during the course of the day.
18. Actively participate in the centers that are planned and in the outdoor play activities that are planned for the children.
19. Maintain confidentiality of all of the children in the classroom.
20. Develop Individual Professional Development Plans to improve their own practice, in turn improving the educational experience of the children
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Associate Degree, or 48 College Credits, or a passing score of 461 on the Para Pro Test. At least 12 of these credits must be in early childhood education.
2. A Certificate of Completion of an approved Teacher Assistant Training Program, in addition to one of the above or a Bachelor's Degree that meets RIDE Standards
3. Rhode Island Early Learning and Development Foundation training certificate and willingness to work towards the RI Early Learning and Development training of Developing a Standards (RIELDS) based curriculum.
4. Pass English Proficiency Test
5. Ability to work with pre-kindergarten children and to be patient, understanding, and effective in meeting their needs.
6. Ability to understand developmentally appropriate practice for pre-kindergarten age children
7. Command of English language (read/write/speak).
8. *Bilingual required postings MUST HAVE command of the Spanish language (read/write/speak).
