QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Educational background including one of the following: Paraeducator Certificate with early childhood, Associate's Degree, two years of college, or Bachelor's degree in any field.
  2. Certification in CPR and First Aid for infant, child and adult, or willingness to obtain certification
  3. Certification in Child Abuse Training and Reporting, or willingness to obtain certification
  4. Ability and willingness to work in an active setting with young children
  5. Ability and willingness to work independently with young children
  6. Initiative to be a self-starter
  7. Intuitive to the needs of the student
  8. Ability to work well with classroom teacher, support staff, administrators, AEA and parents of student as part of an educational team
  9. Ability to be flexible in assignment given
  10. Ability to use good judgment when unexpected problems arise
  11. Ability to use office equipment
  12. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the District may find appropriate and acceptable.

REPORTS TO: Preschool Teacher, Preschool Director, and Building Principal

SUPERVISES: n/a

JOB GOALS:
To assist in meeting the academic, social, emotional and physical needs of students in either an individual or small group setting under the supervision of the building administrator, classroom teacher or designated staff member. To work with an educational team in order to enhance student learning, promote the overall efficiency of the school system, and maximize the educational opportunities available to each child.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Any or all of the following duties may apply to a specific paraeducator position, depending on the needs of the student and the operation of the educational setting.
  1. Assist in providing a positive, healthy environment of appropriate early childhood experiences for each child.
  2. Assist and interact with individual children and small groups as they participate in activities.
  3. Assist in the arrangement and upkeep of classroom materials and equipment.
  4. Assist in the preparation of materials for specific projects and activities.
  5. Assist with personal care, hygiene and physical needs of the children.
  6. Supervise and assist the preschool class during outdoor time, preschool bus times, etc. (Since most of the programs no longer have lunch and rest, we could probably delete this, so there is no confusion with K-6 lunch duty, etc.)
  7. Assist in supervising all activities to ensure the safety and well-being of each child.
  8. Assist with parent-staff communications.
  9. Assist with routine clerical duties as necessary.
  10. Establish and maintain a professional working relationship with other staff in the preschool program.
  11. Attend required district professional growth training, as required through the state of Iowa Department of Education standards. (We no longer participate in the Department of Human Services child care licensing, since we are following IQPPS and NAEYC.
  12. Be present in the classroom with the children at all designated times during preschool program hours except in the case of an emergency.
  13. Follow the state of Iowa Department of Education and school procedures to safeguard the health and safety.
  14. Become knowledgeable of the emergency file and emergency procedures.
  15. Know the tornado and fire procedures for the program and assist in the supervision of required drills.
  16. Fulfill conditions in the negotiated agreement.
  17. Assume other duties as assigned.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
175 days + 2 additional days of inservice = 177 days. Salary and calendar year to be evaluated in accordance with the Negotiated Agreement between the Iowa City Education Association and the Iowa City Community School District.

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the District's policy on Evaluation, State Statute, and any applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement.
