Job Description

The Director of School Social Work will work to remove barriers and maximize each student's ability to excel in school, at home, and in community settings. In addition, the Director of School Social Work will lead, coordinate and provide support to ACPS school social workers and be a liaison to related central office team members to support high academic achievement for all students.

The Director of School Social Work reports to the Executive Director of Student Support Teams in the Department of Student Services, Alternative Programs, and Equity.

Qualifications

Education: Master's Degree in social work required. Doctorate preferred.

Certificates & Licenses: School Social Work Certification, Clinical Social Work License

Experience: Minimum of three years of social work experience. Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs of individuals of diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds. Experience in leadership, program administration, evaluation, and personnel management preferred.

Essential Functions

    • Confers with teachers, administrators, school counselors, school nurses, school psychologists, behavior specialists, and homebound teachers to meet the needs of specific students and their parents.
    • Provides clinical and group supervision and assesses professional learning needs and plans for appropriate staff development activities.
    • Collaborates with other key departments to provide expertise to the development of partnerships with university staff to receive and review internship applications for placement of interns with eligible social workers. Oversees the supervision of field training experiences for interns.
    • Participates in department, staff, board meetings, and program/strategic planning meetings.
    • Participates in consultation and problem solving of clinical cases as needed with School Social Workers.
    • Oversees hiring, selection, orientation, and training of new Social Work employees.
    • Provides summative and observational evaluations of social work staff to ensure high-quality services and optimum use of school social work knowledge and skills.
    • Supervises School Social Work team and support staff.
    • Provides leadership and technical assistance in the development of practice in all areas of school social work services.
    • Participates in the budget process; develops requests; prioritizes departmental needs; and manages/monitors budget expenditures.
    • Collaboratively participates in the Office of Student Support Teams' internal decision-making activities.
    • Assists in the formulation of program guidelines in response to VDOE directives, state legislation, and school policies with regard to attendance and drop-out issues.


  • Actively participates in community resource activities that support departmental goals and student achievement.


  • Coordinates resources within the division and external resources in order to enhance the quality of service provided.
  • Utilizes skills in problem-solving and assessment for intervention to support teachers in meeting the instructional needs of all students.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary meetings to determine the instructional, social, emotional, and/or behavioral needs of all students.
  • Maintains adequate and current assessments and records required by school social workers.
  • Serves as a liaison between the student, home, school, private counseling facilities, and community resources such as social services, court services, and family services agencies.
  • Supports the school division in truancy intervention efforts.
  • Carries out other duties as assigned by the Executive Director of Student Support Teams.

  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
  • Tuberculosis Skin Test.
