    SUMMARY: Facilitate all communication, spoken and signed between Deaf/hard of hearing students, Deaf staff and hearing staff and students by using a manual code of communication appropriate for learning level of student. Adapt language and materials to meet the needs of the Deaf/hard of hearing students. Tutor academic classes and lessons. Provide information to hearing staff and students to assist in better understanding the needs of Deaf/Hard of Hearing students.

    EDUCATION AND RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE:
    • Associate's degree from an Interpreter Preparation Program (IPP) or a degree in Sign Language/Educational Interpreting or a related field.
    • No experience required; one year of experience preferred in educational interpreting.

    LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS or CERTIFICATIONS:
    • Criminal background check required for hire.
    • Ability to frequently travel among district facility locations.
    • Colorado Department of Education Authorization: Educational Interpreter.
    • Must maintain Authorization by completing 60 hours of continuing education within a 5-year period, including 30 hours in knowledge-based training and 30 hours skills-based training.

    TECHNICAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES:
    • Interpersonal and public relations skills.
    • Critical thinking and problem solving skills.
    • Knowledge of and ability to utilize various signing systems including, but not limited to American Sign Language (ASL), Manually Coded English, Conceptually Accurate Signed English (CASE), Cued Speech and Finger spelling. Must demonstrate knowledge of oral interpreting skills.
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the job.
    • Ability to manage multiple tasks with frequent interruptions.
    • Ability to manage multiple priorities.
    • Ability to diffuse and manage volatile and stressful situations.
    • Ability and willingness to carry a pager, FM systems or assistive technology devices during work hours.
    • Ability to promote and follow Board of Education policies, Superintendent policies and building and department procedures.
    • Ability to communicate, interact and work effectively and cooperatively with people from diverse ethnic and
    educational backgrounds.
    • Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate administrator.

    MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT OPERATING KNOWLEDGE:
    • Operating knowledge of and experience with personal computers and peripherals.
    • Operating knowledge of and experience with typical office equipment, such as telephones, copier, fax machine, E-mail, etc.
    • Operating knowledge of FM systems, cochlear implants, hearing aids and visual aid equipment (closed captioning on TVs for videos required within three months after hire.

    SALARY INFORMATION:
    All Classified positions are paid on an hourly basis. All Newly hired classified employees are placed initially on Step 1 of the pay grade for their position. Classified employees can advance an additional 7 steps (maximum Step 8) based on their previous experience. Final hourly placement on the Classified Salary schedule is dependent on the Grade Level for the position being posted and employees' previous work experience. "Grade" refers to position or job classification and "Step" refers to the number of work experience credits or service years. See our Classified Salary Schedule for hourly rates.
