Director, Social Studies

FUNCTIONAL PURPOSE:

This position provides strategic vision and dynamic leadership for all facets of the district-wide in content area. A key role of the position is to facilitate the leveraging of all content area standards, to improve students' critical thinking skills and global awareness skills to raise academic achievement, to close achievement gaps, with a focus on culturally responsive teaching. The Academic Content Area Director is responsible for planning, directing all curriculum areas in the academic content area, marketing, budget planning and management, event coordination oversight, communication, and community collaboration, as necessary.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

•Serves as the curriculum specialist for NCSCOS standards, standards-aligned curriculum resources, and effective instructional strategies to support the development of literacy, critical thinking and problem-solving skills needed to function and thrive in today's world.

•Monitors teacher, school, and district compliance with various local and state board of education policies and legislation.

•Assists individuals and/or groups in identifying external and internal resources for learning opportunities, including facilitator-led training and self-study materials, online or blended-PD, and resources offered by NCDPI.

•Supports the Strategic Plan, the Framework for Teaching and Learning and district initiatives and programs which support the whole child.

•Provides professional development courses and coaching support for teachers according to the Professional Development Framework (content based, job-embedded, ongoing, utilizing adult learning theory, collaboration, reflective, etc.).

•Maintains open communication with all levels of the school system hierarchy; serves as liaison between schools and the various departments within the Central Office; maintains regular contact with colleagues to exchange ideas, share information and develop professional development need assessments and plans.

•Works collaboratively with NCDPI and job-alike educators to network and support academic content area standards.

•Maintains and updates the district website and Canvas Learning Management System.

•Reads professional journals and research papers; attends conferences and workshops to continuously update professional knowledge.

•Performs related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

•Knowledge of the North Carolina Standard Course of Study

•Knowledge of the WS/FCS Strategic Plan to ensure all work efforts and initiatives are in alignment.

•Knowledge of the principles or organization, administration, and personnel management.

•Knowledge of the principles, methods, and practices of budgeting, finance, and governmental accounting to ensure that the department is operating efficiently, complying with laws, maintaining accurate record keeping, and making fiscally responsible decisions.

•Knowledge of public-school administration structures and challenges facing school districts.

•Knowledge of supporting and coaching adult learners.

•Ability to analyze problems, proactively anticipate problems, construct back-up plans, identify alternative solutions, anticipate expected and unexpected consequences of proposed actions, and provide defensible explanations for issues.

•Ability to deal with a multitude of issues and problems that unexpectedly arise, prioritize issues that are time sensitive, and meet expected deadlines.

•Ability to assess system-wide professional learning needs.

•Ability to set high level goals and develop long range plans.

•Ability to assess, order, and inventory curriculum resources.

•Ability to maintain complete and accurate records, develop meaningful reports, and analyze data.

•Ability to work confidentially and with discretion.

•Ability to maintain positive internal relationships with other WS/FCS departments and staff members, and successfully bring closure to projects.

•Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing in the form of reports, presentations, memos, internal and external letter, and e-mail correspondence.

•Ability to make, support and explain recommendations and decisions.

•Ability to interpret educations policies and procedures.

•Ability to mentor, coach, train, and develop employees.

•Skill in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Team Meetings, Canvas as well as Google Drive and any other software used in conjunction with curriculum.

•Strong leadership, organizational, team, and interpersonal skills.

•Skill in developing and conducting presentations.

•Skill in supervising, coordinating, and implementing large programs.

Job Qualification

Pay Grade D2 | Full-time | 12 Months | Minimum Annual Salary $73,810

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

•Minimum: Bachelor's Degree in Education with five years of experience teaching (academic content area), including program coordination.

•Desirable: Master's Degree in Education with seven years of experience teaching including program coordination and supervision.

CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:

•Must possess a valid North Carolina Educator's license.

•Must possess a valid Driver's License.

•Must be in possession of or ability to obtain, a valid North Carolina Principal or Curriculum Instruction Specialist certification
