NURSE MANAGER - DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS : This position exists in a school district and involves the responsibility for bridging the gap of current services between School District Personnel, the Department of Social Services, Probation, Public Health, hospitals, school physicians, school nurses, students and staff. The work is performed under the supervision of the Director of Pupil Personnel Services with leeway given for carrying out the details of the work. Supervision is exercised over Registered Professional Nurses (School). Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES :
  • Acts as a liaison between the district, school physicians, and school nurses on all medical issues and required recordkeeping and reporting in the district;
  • Oversees and trains district nursing staff;
  • Acts as the primary link with the school physician on medical issues;
  • Works with the district staff on implementation and management of the District Wellness Policy;
  • Manages health concerns and recordkeeping in the prevention and control in the area of communicable or contagious diseases such as pandemic flu, H1N1 influenza, MRSA etc;
  • Works with school nurses on implementation of Body Mass Index data collection and recordkeeping;
  • Provides parent education training for mental health awareness and other related issues such as vision and dental care, nutrition, teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases;
  • Updates district procedural guidelines for nurses and staff dealing with physical and mental health needs consistent with the State and County standards;
  • Ensures responsive and appropriate professional development and orientation for all nurses;
  • Monitors nursing inventory and facilities for comprehensive and continued safety;
  • Coordinates with substance abuse counselors on alcohol, tobacco and substance abuse prevention;
  • Communicates with outside agencies social marketing strategies to reduce violence;
  • Coordinates all physical and mental health services for K-12 students and acts as a liaison for such with community agencies, district staff and students;
  • Provides support to staff and students in after school programs in the area of prevention of violence, drug/alcohol/substance abuse;
  • Performs other health and wellness related duties as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS : Thorough knowledge of nursing principles and techniques and their relation to medical practices and skill in their application; ability to understand and follow technical oral and written instructions and the ability to disseminate the same to onsite school nurses; ability to plan and supervise the work of others; ability to keep accurate records and reports; ability to establish productive working relationships and elicit the cooperation of others; good written and oral communication skills.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :Possession of a license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State and five (5) years of experience as a Registered Professional Nurse, three (3) years of which shall have been in a school, clinical, community or hospital setting. School nurse experience preferred.**

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT :Must maintain license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State throughout the tenure of employment.
