ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL AND DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

TITLE: Assistant Principal and Director of Athletics
REPORTS TO: Superintendent of Schools or Designee
LENGTH OF WORK YEAR: Eleven Months
START DATE: ASAP (Upon Board of Education Approval)

Description
  1. Work with students, faculty, and staff, under the direction of the school principal, to ensure a school environment that is academically challenging while maintaining a focus on social-emotional growth.
  2. Provide leadership and supervision for the class instruction, intramural activities, and interschool athletic competition in the total physical education program.
  3. Develops and maintains a K-12 extracurricular program of athletics, interscholastic and intramural activities, which encourages satisfying participation by a broad cross-section of students.
  4. Generally responsible for providing leadership, coordination and innovation in the area of interscholastic athletics and physical education so that each student may derive the maximum benefits from their educational experience. This will be done in close cooperation with building and central administration.
Key Duties and Responsibilities as Assistant Principal (Illustrative)
  1. Assist the principal in the overall administration of the school.
  2. Assume the duties and responsibilities of the principal, in the absence of the regular principal.
  3. Participate in and supervise the schedules of classes and extracurricular activities.
  4. Participate in and supervise the preparation of student schedules.
  5. Assist in coordinating student activities and events, e.g., field trips, co-curricular and/or extra-curricular, wellness events.
  6. Coordinate and supervise the administration of examinations, state assessments related data reporting and state reports.
  7. Assist in updating the faculty, staff, and parent/student handbooks to reflect changes in building procedures or board of education policy.
  8. Supervise details related to the opening day of school and closing of school.
  9. Supervises evening and weekend activities.
  10. Prepare requisitions for supplies, textbooks, and equipment, conduct inventories, maintain records, and checks on receipts for such material.
  11. Participate in conducting of safety inspections and safety drill practice activities.
  12. Assist in coordinating transportation, custodial, cafeteria, and other support services.
  13. Supervise the reporting and monitoring of student attendance, andwork with the attendance supervisor for investigative follow-up actions.
  14. Assist in maintaining discipline throughout the student body.
  15. Implement and administer code of conduct terms and provisions.
  16. Carry out disciplinary procedures as established by the building and District Code of Conduct.
  17. Serve with parent, faculty, and student groups as requested in advancing educational and related activities and objectives.
  18. Perform such record-keeping functions as the principal may direct.
  19. Participate in and supervise recruitment, screening, interviewing, conducting background checks, and recommending candidates for professional and support staff positions.
  20. Assist building administrators with observations and evaluation of instructional staff for the purpose of enhancement of instructional delivery and student performance.
  21. Assist building administrators with the recruiting, screening, hiring and orientation of instructional staff.
  22. Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Key Duties and Responsibilities as Director of Athletics (Illustrative)
  1. Oversee the K-12 physical education program, including budget recommendations, program evaluation, and teacher evaluation.
  2. Provide recommendations for staff development activities to the Superintendent of Schools or designee.
  3. Assume a leadership role in developing curriculum for newly mandates (state or district) physical education initiatives.
  4. Coordinate department meetings with physical education teachers (on a regular basis) for the purpose of instructional continuity and articulation of curriculum.
  5. Provide support for department faculty in implementation of planned curriculum which incorporates SED and/or Board of Education curricular and instructional mandates.
  6. Collaborate with district and building administrators in development of district goals for curriculum and instruction for the department.
  7. Organize and administer the overall program of extra-curricular athletics for the District.
  8. Recruit, screen, interview, verify certification, conduct background checks and recommend coaches for interscholastic and intramural teams and athletic based clubs.
  9. Collaborate with NYSPHSAA, NYSED and Section VI to ensure that our student-athletes and coaches comply with policies, regulations and procedures.
  10. Organize and facilitate a seasonal "Meet the Coaches" event (fall, winter, spring).
  11. Supervise coaches and make changes as necessary.
  12. Conduct written evaluations of each coach and hold personal meeting with each coach following each season.
  13. Arrange schedules for all teams and secure officials for home contests.
  14. Coordinate the after-school use of indoor and outdoor facilities including approval of practice schedules.
  15. Provide professional development opportunities in the field of athletics, physical education.
  16. Exercise responsibility for purchasing, including creating seasonal bid specifications for all athletic supplies, equipment and uniforms.
  17. Arrange for intramural programs and schedule facility and field use for same.
  18. Arrange transportation for athletic teams.
  19. Exercise responsibility for supervision of all home interscholastic sporting events including recruiting, assigning and collaborating with business office for payment.
  20. Represent the District at various league, conference and sectional meetings.
  21. Coordinate public relations activities on behalf of the interscholastic teams, including serving as liaison with the Booster Club.
  22. Coordinate athletic awards and recognition programs.
  23. Assist in establishing academic and physical requirements of eligibility for participation in each sport, and verify each athlete's eligibility.
  24. Maintain an updated inventory of all uniforms and equipment.
  25. Keep records of the results of all middle and senior high school contests, and athletic scholarships.
  26. Assure provision for physical examination of all athletes prior to the beginning of each season, consistent with Board policy.
  27. Implement and administer code of conduct terms and provisions.
  28. Supervise the contract of the athletic trainer.
  29. Supervise ticket sales and assume responsibility for the proper handling of funds.
  30. Works with school nurses to arrange for sports physicals.
  31. Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.
