NATURE OF POSITION:
Under the direction of the principal, the English Learner (EL) teacher's responsibility is to guide students toward the fulfillment of their intellectual, physical, and psychological potential while working with the EL student to close any English language proficiency gaps as identified with an annual language proficiency assessment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Classroom Planning, Instruction, and Management:


  • Humanizes instruction by planning a program of study that meets the individual language needs of EL students.
  • Secures and prepares instructional materials in advance and shows written evidence of preparation.
  • Plans purposeful assignments for student teachers, teacher assistants, and substitute teachers.
  • Assists in the evaluation, selection, and requisition of books, equipment, audio-visuals, and other supplementary materials
  • Demonstrates knowledge of subject matter.
  • Diagnoses, develops and implements ELD plans in accordance with VDOE guidelines, in collaboration with core teachers.
  • Refers students to specialists when deficiencies are detected or suspected.
  • Serves as the school level specialist for English Learner students
  • Implements all curriculum programs adopted system wide in a positive and efficient manner.
  • Participates in curriculum development appropriate to assignment.
  • Establishes clear objectives for all learning experiences and communicates these objectives to students.
  • Demonstrates the ability to communicate effectively with students and families, using appropriate resources
  • Makes use of a variety of resources, materials, and methods in an effort to improve the effectiveness of instruction.
  • Speaks clearly using fluent and appropriate language in well-modulated tones.
  • Evaluates pupil accomplishments on a regular basis.
  • Exhibits interest in what is being taught and in the needs of the student across the curriculum
  • Confers with colleagues, students, and/or parents on a regular basis, advocating for EL students and their families.
  • Promptly and accurately handles routine matters involving reports, records and moneys.
  • Takes all necessary precautions to protect and to maintain facilities, equipment, and materials.
  • Returns materials to their assigned place or designated personnel promptly after use.
  • Emphasizes and enforces safety factors within the classroom, building, and throughout school property.
  • As an extension of classroom management responsibilities supervises students throughout the school as assigned, or as circumstances require.
  • Maintains a disciplined atmosphere appropriate to the teaching environment.
  • Maintains a practice of good housekeeping for self and students to improve the learning environment.
  • Establishes reasonable classroom rules with consistent enforcement occurring in a positive way.


Staff Relationships:


  • Assists in the formulation and implementation of policies and/or regulations, which are established by the School Board.
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings and serves on staff committees.
  • Serves as the case manager for all identified EL students in the specified schools
  • Adheres to administrative regulations and directives.
  • Cooperates with administrative and supervisory staff in the evaluation process (to include the annual English language proficiency assessments)
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative relations with co-workers relative to school matters and ELD plans

  • Maintains high degree of professional ethics in activities in school and community.
  • Maintains respect for the worth and dignity of each student.
  • Participates in professional meetings and serves on and contributes to special committees.
  • Provides for professional growth through an ongoing program of reading, workshops, seminars, conferences, and/or advanced course work.
  • Assists in the planning and/or sponsorship of co-curricular activities.
  • Makes provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day.
  • Cooperates with community agencies as they pertain to classroom activities.
  • Demonstrates a positive view of the philosophy and objectives of the school to parents and community.
  • Abides by adopted board of education policies and procedures.
  • Maintains a satisfactory record of punctuality and attendance.
  • Conducts all school related activities in a manner that serves as a positive influence on youth.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:
Must hold or be eligible for a Virginia teaching license with appropriate endorsement.

START DATE: 2021 - 2022 School Year
SALARY / STIPEND: Consistent with the 2021-2022 DPS Teacher Salary Scale, depending on experience and advanced degrees. In addition, the Danville School Board pays the employee cost in full, for state-mandated life insurance; and in part for state retirement and for health insurance. Other benefits include sick leave and personal leave.
