GENERAL PURPOSE

This position is responsible for providing support to the instructional process by ensuring

students and staff are effective and ethical users of ideas and information; empowering

students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and ethical users of

information; instilling a love of reading in all students and ensuring equitable access to

information. Also responsible for collaborating with teachers and specialists to design and

implement lessons, units of instruction, assess student learning and instructional effectiveness;

providing leadership and expertise necessary to ensure the school library program is aligned

with the mission, goals and objectives of the District and is an integral component of the

learning and instructional program.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Develops and implements library programming and instruction to support the curriculum.

Develops the library collection by selecting, purchasing, and maintaining the collection to meet the needs of the school community.

Supports the proper use of technology and information resources.

Educates members of the learning community for the purpose of helping them to locate, use and apply information needed to attain educational goals and meet student needs.

Works with building department leaders implementing reading programs that positively influence learning and improve student performance and engagement.

Uses best practices to select, acquire and maintain quality resources in a variety of formats (print, digital, audio, variety of languages, etc.) providing current resources and ensuring the availability of materials when required.

Conducts classes and/or activities in a variety of formats promoting the use and enjoyment of literature and informational texts.

Promotes reading to students and staff for the purpose of information gathering and pleasure. Assist teachers, students, and administrators identifying digital and print resource materials for use in classroom and class assignments.

Participates in the curriculum development process to ensure that the curriculum includes the full range of literacy skills (information, media, visual, digital, and technological literacy) necessary to meet content standards and to develop lifelong learners.

Collaborates with teachers and students to design engaging inquiry learning experiences and assessments that incorporate multiple literacies (including information literacy) and foster critical thinking.

Evaluates books and/or periodicals for retention within collection and maintains the collection ensuring the availability of books and library materials.

Performs circulation activities controlling the use, location and availability of items in the collection.

Processes library books, periodicals, software and related media materials; notices of missing, damaged, or overdue books, etc. providing and maintaining access to library resources and required materials.

Trains and manages a student technology support team that can age-appropriately support technology use in the building per the needs of the school.

Provides basic technology support for students and teachers in cooperation with IT department.

Remains current in professional best practices applicable to school library programs.

Performs other related duties as required/assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience

Education and Experience: Master's degree in job-related area, required.

Job related experience with increasing levels of responsibility is required.

Certificates, Licenses and Other Special Requirements

Possession of a Library Media K-12 Missouri Teacher Certification, required.

Ability to obtain and maintain "Highly Qualified" status as defined by Missouri's

Department of Elementary Education Certifiation, required.

Must pass a Criminal Background Clearance, the results of which must be satisfactory to

the District, required.

Knowledge of basic math; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and solve practical problems.

Knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include appropriate codes, policies, regulations and/or laws; age appropriate activities; lesson plan requirements; stages of child development; and behavioral management strategies.

Skill to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to routinely upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Work environment is primarily inside, where the noise and temperature levels are moderate.

The work is light work which requires exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects.

Must possess the physical ability to work primarily with fingers, perceive the nature of sounds, make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes, express or exchange ideas by the spoken word, substantial movements (motions) with the hands, wrists, and/or fingers, and discern letters or numbers at a given distance.

Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: crouching, feeling, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, manual dexterity, mental acuity, reaching, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.
