K-4 Principal, Job Description
Reports to: Chief Academic Officer
Wage/Hour Status: Exempt/12-month
The K-4 Principal is primarily responsible for overseeing the instructional program within the school and the implementation of the school's curriculum, in order to provide the vision and leadership needed to create a progressive, dynamic and student-centered learning community, grounded in Tapestry's three dimensions of student achievement. The K-4 Principal will embrace our shared leadership model as well as see individual student success (both academic and social) as paramount and it should guide work with teachers, students and families. The K-4 Principal directly supervises a large number of instructional and support staff and has important responsibilities for the supervision, management and professional development of staff as well as maintaining the vibrant culture of the organization. The K-4 Principal is the voice and face of the school and is accountable for hearing and dealing with all parent and staff concerns and feedback. The K-4 Principal reports to the Chief Academic Officer and works closely with the Compass Leadership Team to realize the mission and vision of the school maintaining the highest standards and ethics while embodying Tapestry's Core Values of perseverance, integrity, respect and responsibility.

Curriculum, Instruction and Programming
  • Creates and strengthens a data-driven culture that relentlessly seeks continuous improvement
  • Provides leadership and support, coordinates, articulates, evaluates, and supervises curriculum and instructional programs with K-4 curriculum coordinator including the math and literacy coaches. This includes professional development.
  • Ensure curriculum resources reflect the diversity of our student population.
  • Establishes, manages, and develops strong teams that collaborate, communicate, and work together to achieve goals.
  • Ensure teachers employ techniques of active pedagogy described in EL Education's Core Practices and Tapestry's strategic work plan frameworks.
  • Ensure that instruction is effective and meets the needs of diverse learners.
  • Work with the CAO and Compass Leadership Team to ensure instructional consistency between schools.
Supervision & Hiring
  • Observes instructional staff and leaders to drive pedagogical growth and student achievement.
  • Initiates coaching plans and evaluations to ensure mentorship and development of all staff.
  • Collaborates directly with HR to recruit, hire & retain high quality staff.
  • Coordinates and evaluates all staff members using Tapestry APPR (Danielson) Plans.

  • Collaborates with the Director of Enrollment to recruit and retain students.
  • Creates and maintains structures for Kindergarten screening annually.
  • Collaborates with counselors and school nurse to ensure SEL and health needs are met.
  • Collaborates with special education to provide necessary individualized programming.
Diversity, Equity & Inclusion
  • Collaborates with shared leadership teams to plan and execute curriculum and instruction that fosters student growth, creativity, and agency through aligned culturally relevant materials and pedagogy.
  • Develops school's ability to foster a culturally responsive classroom.
  • Ensure equity in instructional delivery. Promote school-wide belief that all students can learn and achieve at high levels.
  • Continuously strengthens personal and staff knowledge in academic standards and their DEI considerations in conjunction with the curriculum team in order to promote effective instructional design.
Strategic Planning
  • Propose school-wide instructional goals to CAO based on data and feedback.
  • Creates annual Work Plan based off from a K-12 Strategic Plan.
  • Progress monitors goals mid and end of year with the CAO.
Data Driven Initiatives, RtI and Student Supports
  • Utilizes meaningful data and continuous feedback from students, staff, families, and the community to strengthen school programs and practices.
  • Develop instructional schedules including creation of a master schedule for all classes and activities. Ensure common planning time for teachers. Ensure schedules support instructional and curricular goals. Revise as needed. Maintain updated schedules for CAO and COO review.
  • Work with the leadership team to develop a plan and implement strategies for raising achievement in subgroups that do not make adequate yearly progress. Work with teachers and teams to develop plans for individual students achieving below grade level.
  • Lead Instructional Leadership Team (ILC).
  • With the Assistant Principal, oversee after school programming including extra-curricular clubs, sports etc. Ensure programs are adequately staffed and well defined. Ensure safety and consistent use of Tapestry Charter School's policies and practices.

Culture and Character

  • Builds and maintains a vibrant school culture of open, effective communication, and participation in shared leadership and decision-making among staff, students, parents, board members, and other appropriate stakeholders.
  • Establishes, fosters, and sustains a culture of academic success and social-emotional development through partnerships with students, staff, families, and the community.
  • Directs the implementation and supervision of tier III discipline policies and procedures.
  • Supports and implements restorative practices.
  • Support teachers in establishing effective classroom management systems and developing students' positive social behaviors through coaching and professional development (relationships not rules).
  • Be highly present and visible during school hours, model, monitor and sustain strong instructional leadership, ensuring a positive professional culture.
  • Create and sustain programs to reflect a culture of high expectations for all.
  • Create and sustain a race equity culture, including skill building and leading self and others through awareness, growth, and development.
  • Provides leadership for assessing, developing and improving climate and culture.
  • Systematically and fairly recognizes and celebrates accomplishments of staff and students.
  • Provides leadership, encouragement, opportunities and structure for staff to continually design more effective teaching and learning experiences for all students.
Management and Organizational Development
  • Uses current research and theory about effective schools and leadership to develop and revise his/her professional growth plan with the CAO.
  • Promotes & cultivates collaboration with all team and community members.
  • Is easily accessible and approachable to all team and community members, maintaining an open door policy.
  • Is highly visible and engaged in the school community.
  • Articulates the desired school culture and shows evidence about how its reinforced.
  • Complies with state and federal mandates.
  • Addresses current and potential issues in a timely manner.
  • Manages fiscal and physical resources responsibility, efficiently and effectively.
  • Protects instructional time by designing and managing operational procedures to maximize learning.
  • Communicates effectively with both internal and external audiences about the operations of the school.

Family Engagement
  • Engages families and the community in support of each child's learning and the school's learning goals by promoting and cultivating strong family partnerships.
  • Maintains monthly Family Crew (formerly known as PAG).
  • Promotes and supports a structure for family and community involvement at Tapestry Charter School.
  • Facilities the connections of students and families to the health and social services that support a focus on learning.
  • Collaboratively establishes a culture that welcomes and honors families and community members seeking ways to engage them in student learning and service.
Qualifications :
Masters degree or CAS in Educational Leadership
NYS Certification School Building Leader/School District Leader or equivalent
Specific Skills/Knowledge:
Exemplary writing and communication skills
Ability to set priorities, manage time effectively and demonstrate flexibility and adaptability Strong interpersonal skills - ability to build strong relationships with staff, students and parents.
