SPED Curriculum & Instruction Coordinator

Primary Purpose:
Coordinates Special Education Programs in compliance with federal, state and district requirements, and ensures provision of effective instructional and related services per IEPs developed, based on individual student needs.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, Master's degree preferred
  • Valid Texas Educator Certification with required special education endorsement
  • Mid management Certification preferred


Special Knowledge/Skills:
  • Knowledge of Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process and Individual Education Plan (IEP) goal setting process and implementation
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral forms with all levels of management, both internal and external to the district.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships both internal and external to the district.
  • Ability to use computers; including, software, database used by the district, spreadsheet and word processing software, calculator, copy machine and telephone.
  • Ability to analyze data
  • Ability to use effective interview techniques, effective public speaking skills, and problem-solving skills


Experience:
  • Minimum 3 years of special education teaching experience


Additional Requirements:
  • Must be able to drive and have reliable transportation available during working hours in order to go to assigned work locations.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Understands and supports the mission, vision and values of Texans Can Academies.
  • Provides professional development for teachers of special populations, general education teachers and other staff.
  • Oversees the intervention programs for students who receive special education services.
  • Understands and supports the continuum of special education services.
  • Understand and comply with confidentiality of students in accordance with both state and federal laws.
  • Participates in professional development activities and staff meetings as required or assigned.
  • Assists school administration with the scheduling of special education services
  • Assists in the planning and implementation of staff development and in-service programs pertaining to special education.
  • Supports campuses with the monitoring of students' academic progress that is reflected in the formative and summative evaluations to ensure students meet desired educational goals and uses assessment results to coordinate instruction and schedule for students who are receiving special education services.
  • Compiles, maintains, submits and files all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required by the district, state and federal laws.
  • Support campuses to ensure the instructional environment is safe, organized and conducive to learning, with accessibility to all students.
  • Collaborates with district personnel, Region service centers, and other professionals to carry out school wide instructional or related activities for students who receive special education services.
  • Helps campuses to educate parents on special education services and programs.
  • Advocates for students who receive special education services to ensure they have an equitable educational opportunity.
  • Supports general education/special education teachers and administrators in implementation of appropriate strategies to meet the needs of students with disabilities.
  • Supports implementation of accommodations and modifications for students with IEPs in the general education classroom and during Special Education service time
  • Plans, develops, implements, and administers programs and services to meet identified needs, including development and implementation of new programs and
  • Coordinates extended school year services.
  • Creates and maintains Special Education documentation as required by federal, state and district regulations
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Supervise assigned Intervention Specialist/s.


Working Conditions:

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Work with frequent interruptions, maintain emotional control under stress. Occasional prolonged or irregular hours. Regular district wide travel to multiple work locations as assigned, with some nights and weekend activities occasionally required. Position is in office setting and may involve prolonged work at a desk in one location. Light Work: may require occasional light lifting or carrying of up to 25lbs..
