SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

Under the general direction of the Special Education Administrator, the Special Education Facilitator (SEF) provides subject matter expertise in assisting principals, teachers, and other district personnel in the implementation of IDEA, and other applicable federal and state laws and regulations for special education, and Washoe County School District's special education policies and procedures. Provides consultative support for special education teachers and the Individualized Educational Program (IEP) team to formulate IEP's and define instructional objectives and techniques for implementation of the IEP. SEF assists the special education teachers with planning and managing to promote program effectiveness and provides consultative support and in-service activities to other staff personnel. Assists special education teachers through increasing awareness of community resources. Supports WCSD Strategic Plan goals and objectives related to special education student performance and student learning through embedded, on-site professional development to build the capacity of special education teachers, which will ensure students are performing at rates commensurate with general education peers and/or achieving goals outlined in the IEP.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides responsive service and hands on support to assigned staff and schools to ensure the effective delivery of special education services and the achievement of educational outcomes.
  • Special Education Facilitators will support special education teachers by teaching, modeling, and providing embedded training in instructional and behavior management strategies ;
  • Special Education Facilitators will also work directly with general and special education teachers to model effective co-teaching strategies, inclusive practices and coordinate with site administrators on how to implement responsible scheduling to ensure students with disabilities are being effectively served and performing at the same level as general education peers.
  • Provides training and support to address behavior issues for students, including students requiring support through the MTSS process;
  • Provides schools assistance, through MTSS teams, to identify supports, collect data, etc. for students not yet identified to receive special education services;
  • Provides guidance on serving low incident populations as well as ongoing observation of special education teachers to ensure effective strategies are being followed and implemented.
  • Provides hands on support to staff in data collection and using the District's electronic IEP program effectively and efficiently;
  • Maintains current, actionable knowledge of laws, research, and trends in special education and available District programming and supports in order to provide subject matter expertise and leadership to staff and families.

  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Education/Experience : Any combination of education and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:
  • Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree in an area of general or special education or related field from an accredited college or university.

  • AND
  • Experience: A minimum of five (5) years successful classroom teaching, special education experience preferred.

  • AND
  • Qualification into the Teacher Leadership Pool is required.

  • Licenses/Certificates: Possession of a valid Nevada special education teaching license.

    • Nevada Academic Content Standards (NVACS)
    • Adopted core curriculum materials
    • Adopted special education curriculum materials
    • Research based reading and math intervention strategies
    • IDEA and Nevada Revised Statute and Nevada Administrative Code with respect to special education requirements
    • Behavior analytics and Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS).
    • IEP process and related services including the coordination of services to ensure student needs are met

    Skill in:
    • Group and 1-1 training/coaching and proven ability to effectively collaborate with school teams and individuals
    • Effective IEP development and implementation
    • Implementation of proven strategies and experiences for reading and math interventions for struggling students
    • Experience in the implementation of co-teaching strategies.

    Ability to:
    • Train teachers and staff in functional behavior analytics and positive behavior intervention supports
    • Train and model to teachers effective strategies to ensure growth of low incident populations
    • Show competence in working with low incident populations

    Qualification into the Teacher Leadership Pool is required. If the qualified candidate selected is not currently in the Teacher Leadership Pool, they must meet annual requirements for Site-Level Teacher Leadership Pool and qualify into the District-Level Teacher Leadership Pool within three years.

    The Washoe County School District pays an additional legislatively-designated amount to the Public Employees Retirement System on behalf of the employee for retirement benefits. No retirement contribution is made by the employee.

    New employees will be fingerprinted upon hire and will have $58.50 deducted from their first paycheck to help defray the cost of fingerprinting. Fingerprint fees are subject to change.
