POSITION SUMMARY:

The Director of Media Relations and Television Broadcast plans, develops, and executes all media relations strategies and other communications initiatives and supports the Executive Director of Communications in administering the management agreement between APS and Atlanta Educational Telecommunications Collaborative, Inc (AETC). This position works closely with the APS senior executive leadership and the Superintendent on media strategy and positioning of major initiatives, including working directly with local and national media outlets.

This role serves as the liaison between APS and AETC, which is responsible for managing the district's broadcast assets, including WABE, WPBA, Cable Channel 22, and the PBA Website. The incumbent understands the operational activities of the management company as they relate to compliance with all FCC, NPR, and CPB regulations, rules, and mandates. The Director communicates on an ongoing basis with AETC senior management.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  • Assists supervisor in administering the management agreement between APS and AETC, and works directly with APS managers and AETC senior management to ensure constant communication, collaboration, and progress towards the goals and objectives of the APS broadcast assets
  • Develops and executes districtwide media relations strategies, works with local and national media to place stories about APS' initiatives by utilizing key message platforms, and serves as APS spokesperson for print, broadcast, and social media
  • Assists supervisor in developing and executing crisis communications strategies and serves as a point person to manage media interviews at the district and school levels. In addition, this role cultivates and maintains relationships with a diverse set of media outlets and reporters to pitch positive, proactive news stories about the district
  • Manages, implements, and monitors APS crisis communications plan, including maintaining relations with key external parties (i.e., police, fire, GEMA, Georgia Department of Education)
  • In conjunction with AETC's senior management, manages the production of programming for Cable Channel 22
  • Supervises assigned staff with work assignments, schedules, and employee evaluations
  • Works with AETC's senior management to ensure compliance with all FCC rules and regulations, and influences and monitors all FCC reporting, community ascertainment, and licensing issues
  • Works with AETC's senior management to develop and implement internship opportunities for APS students
  • Manages and directs APS video production staff and a team of video production contractors to produce positive video stories about the district.
  • Manages and directs staff in the programming of Cable Channel 22 to promote positive video stories about the district
  • Develops districtwide media protocols and policies to be followed by all employees
  • Advises senior executive leadership team and board members when delivering messages to the media to promote a positive image of the district and trains senior leaders, administrators, staff, school board, and teachers on how to interact effectively with the media
  • Writes and disseminates news releases, media advisories, media briefs, talking points, pitches, and other collateral material for reporters to raise the district's visibility and arrange for dissemination of appropriate still and video photography. Respond to public information requests from the media
  • Develops and maintains relationships with public information officers at key organizations and disseminates special interest stories.
  • Develops and implements media strategies based on news coverage of issues and events involving the district and education. Updates and maintains the district's online newsroom
  • Manages and oversees the monthly video and broadcast production of the Atlanta Board of Education Meeting, utilizing video and production staff
  • Required to have prompt, regular attendance in-person or virtually and be available to work on-site, in-person during regular business hours, and as needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned by an appropriate administrator or their representativ


Requirements :

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • Responsible for supervising multiple functions with full accountability for effective operation and results
  • High attention to detail and ability to conduct financial analyses, justifications, and forecast studies
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and excellent presentation skills, and ability to develop executive presentations
  • Ability to perform various media relations tasks (spokesperson, pitching positive news stories, coordinating interviews, responding to media inquiries, working with reporters, planning news conferences)
  • Able to manage media communications during a crisis, including media coordination and messaging
  • Skilled at developing strategic messaging to use in various media platforms, including social media
  • Proven organizational skills to develop and implement communications plans and promotional events and the knowledge of the latest media measurement practices


Compensation :

GRADE: 137

WORK DAYS: ANNUAL

SALARY: $95, 110 - $130, 423

FLSA Status : Exempt
