School Counselor - Senior High
QUALIFICATIONS:
REPORTS TO: School Principal
JOB GOAL: To perform regular guidance and counseling duties as outlined under performance responsibilities
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Work year as established by the Board of Directors. Salary established by district adopted salary schedules.
EVALUATION: Teaching performance will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel.
School Counselor - Senior High
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Iowa certification in secondary counseling required
- Master's degree in counselor education required
- Previous counseling experience in grades 9 to 12 level preferred
- Group counseling experience with parents, teachers, and students, preferred
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the District may find appropriate and acceptable.
REPORTS TO: School Principal
JOB GOAL: To perform regular guidance and counseling duties as outlined under performance responsibilities
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Academic/Career
- Assist with post-secondary planning (including assistance with applications, letters of recommendation, transcripts, etc.)
- Schedule students into appropriate classes
- Monitor academic progress
- Facilitate evening programs for parents and students
- Participate in child study teams
- Serve on special education teams
- Participate in special accommodation planning teams (504 plans and assistance plans)
- Disseminate scholarship information
- Coordinate standardized assessment
- ITED (Iowa Test of Educational Development) administered to students in grades 9-11
- AP (Advanced Placement) administered to students interested in earning college credit for advanced study in specific subject areas
- PSAT (National Merit Scholarship Competition Test) administered primarily to juniors and sophomores; this test serves as the initial step in the National Merit Scholarship Program.
- PLAN (Optional ACT developed test for sophomores)
- Coordinate PSEO (Post-Secondary Enrollment Option) with Kirkwood Community College and the University of Iowa
- Coordinate graduation activities
- Coordinate at-risk services
- Provide NCAA Clearinghouse information for students planning to participate in athletics in college at the Division I or Division II level
- Collaborate with the Workplace Learning Connection for various career-related educational opportunities (job shadows, internships, practicums, guest speakers, career fairs, etc.)
- Social-Emotional
- Provide individual and group counseling/skill building
- Provide social/emotional support to students, staff, and parents
- Refer students to outside agencies when needed
- Serve as school contact with outside agencies and support systems
- Assist new students as they transition to community or between buildings
- Provide crisis counseling
- Mediate for students, teachers, parents and/or staff
- Provide in-service training as appropriate for faculty
- Advocate for self-development (plan/goal setting, self-improvement, behavioral changes, etc.)
- Public Relations
- Communicate with parents, teachers, faculty, and staff
- Serve as school contact with outside agencies (private psychologists, counselors, etc)
- Communicate services to parents and students through mailings, phone contacts, classroom presentations, and individual meetings
- Communicate accessibility of program to parents and students through mailings, phone contacts, e-mail, classroom presentations, and individual meetings
