    About St. Procopius School
St. Procopius Elementary School is Chicago's only Catholic dual-language (English/Spanish) school. We offer children (pre-kindergarten through eighth grade) a truly unique experience in a faith-based environment firmly grounded in the Catholic tradition of education. As a dual-language school, instruction at St. Procopius is divided between English and Spanish. In a dual-language instructional setting, there are no translations, nor are lessons repeated in the other language; each subject area for a given grade is taught solely in one language or the other. As well, the concept of dual-language instruction does not involve Spanish being taught as a second (or foreign) language; rather, both English and Spanish alternate as primary languages of instruction in all subject areas.

The fundamental principle of our two-way-immersion dual-language program is that the core curriculum is taught in two languages to both native Spanish speakers and native English speakers. In this manner, students not only learn from their instructors in traditional ways, but are also interacting with each other during lessons and learning academic vocabulary that allows them to build bridges of knowledge between both languages. In its pre-kindergarten programs, St. Procopius uses a 90/10 Spanish/English instructional split, gradually incorporating more English instruction until an even split between English and Spanish is reached in the third grade. The ultimate goal is that, in addition to fulfilling the requirements of the core curriculum, students will be bilingual and bi-literate when they graduate to high school.

Multicultural immersion is a key component of the educational experience at St. Procopius. We are a racially and ethnically diverse community. We celebrate diversity, and we strive for our students not only to have an appreciation of their own culture, but also to develop an understanding of other cultures. This is an idea that we believe is a building block for future success, as well as for the development of meaningful interpersonal communication skills in an increasingly smaller and more diverse world. St. Procopius School is dedicated to providing dual-language instruction based in the Catholic faith. We offer students and parents alike a singular educational experience that cannot be found anywhere else in the Chicago area.
