Purpose of the Position: The Communicable Disease Lead Nurse provides specialized professional nursing expertise related to epidemiological trends and the transmission, treatment, and containment o f communicable diseases within the MMSD community. In addition, this includes all prevention activities around communicable disease. Duties require independent decision making, working knowledge of epidemiology that includes current clinical knowledge, treatment requirements, risk factors, infectious disease management and, current nursing techniques and case management related to treatment of public health outbreaks.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provides consultation and case management to prevent and monitor communicable diseases within the MMSD community.
  • Participates in the coordination of communicable disease outbreak investigation and acts as a lead MMSD consultant to Public Health Madison Dane County.
  • Leads all non-Covid outbreak investigations (ie. measles, mumps, pertussis)
  • Maintains all policies, procedures, and guidelines in accordance with CDC, DHS and local public health guidance.
  • Develops and coordinates all training/education for staff around communicable diseases (ie. blood borne pathogen, PPE, etc.)
  • Develops and Leads Respiratory Program for Fit testing for all MMSD employees.
  • Assists with MMSD's immunization programA in accordance with the Wisconsin Student Immunization Law.
  • Coordinates MMSD's Hepatitis B Clinic for staff.
  • Coordinates all vaccination clinics for staff and students.
  • Coordinates all MMSD/MSCR TB Risk Assessment/Skin testing
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, family members, nursing staff, and all MMSD/MSCR employees.
  • Maintain a safe and healthy work environment, utilizing safe work methods and procedures in accordance with MMSD Health Guidelines
  • Maintains records and data pertaining to communicable disease management.
  • Collaborates with School Nurses for communicable disease prevention/outbreaks/follow up.
  • Assists with COVID-19 lead nurse responsibilities.
  • Participates in COVID-19 response after hours call schedule rotation.
  • Performs other responsibilities as assigned by the Executive Director of Student and Staff Support and Assistant Director of Health Services .
  • Takes a leadership role in working with our partners and community agencies to investigate, pilot, collect data, and implement testing protocols across our programs and schools.
  • Follows district policies and promotes a positive image of the district at all times.
  • Contribute to the efficiency and effectiveness of MMSD's COVID-19 response by offering suggestions and participating as an active member of the work team.
  • Develops and maintains positive working relationships.

  • Prior experience working with children and adults.
  • Prior experience and education in epidemiology and communicable disease management.
  • Ability to organize effectively.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse students, staff, and community, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to make judgments and perform when confronted with emergency situations.
  • Job requires sitting, standing, walking, lifting (up to 50 lbs), climbing, bending, reaching and kneeling.
  • Experience working cross-culturally and/or commitment to work toward improving one's own cultural competence, i.e., valuing difference/diversity, recognizing personal limitations in one's skills and expertise, and having the desire to learn in these areas.
  • Good skills as a communicator and team member
  • Follow all MMSD District and Health Services Guidelines and emergency protocols for students
  • Commitment to the model of full integration


Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Required licensure: Nurse Practitioner with Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriber
  • CPR/AED certification.

Appointment Type and Duration

Limited Term Employment, 2020-2021 school year appointment.

Work Schedule

Monday - Friday Variable hours, not to exceed 40 in any week. Will include nights and weekends
