FUNCTION

Early Childhood teachers in ECFE are responsible for creating and implementing lesson plans based on Early Childhood Indicators of Progress, integration with family education and best practices in early childhood. The Early Childhood teacher creates a learning environment and facilitates learning that is developmentally appropriate, respectful and inclusive.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bilingual in English and Somali or Hmong or Spanish preferred
  • Valid MN teaching license required in Birth-Kindergarten
  • Demonstrate knowledge of anti-racist teaching
  • Demonstrate unwavering commitment to anti-racist teaching
  • Experience in urban, multicultural education
  • Knowledge of, and experience with, cultural differences and students learning English as a second language
  • Knowledge of, and experience with, the process of acculturation to American society
  • Experience providing early childhood education in multiple environments such as home visiting, PreK-12 schools, partnerships, hospitals, and clinics
  • Knowledge and understanding of the needs of families and children
  • Demonstrate continued professional development through course work, research, peer collaboration and job-embedded staff development
  • Working knowledge of the Early Childhood Indicators of Progress Birth-2 and 3-5 years, classroom management techniques, current research on best practices and strategies, as well as students' learning styles and needs, both academic and affective

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop lesson plans integrating Early Childhood & Family Education content
  • Create learning environments that are safe & respectful supporting racial, linguistic, gender & ability identities
  • Select, adapt and individualize materials appropriate for diverse student populations and skill levels
  • Teach students the required curricula using strategies that foster thinking, reasoning and problem solving through play-based approach
  • Teach in a variety of settings such as home visits, PreK-12 schools, partnerships etc.
  • Establish developmentally appropriate instructional and behavioral expectations for students and effectively communicate them to students and their families
  • Collaborate and communicate regularly with families in making educational decisions and use family and community resources to support learning
  • Create and maintain a positive & supportive relationship honoring the racial, religious/spiritual, gender, sexual orientation, cultural, linguistic, and varying ability needs with all members of the ECE staff and families
  • Assess students' developmental, cognitive and social needs using GOLD® and provide developmentally appropriate instruction to meet those needs
  • Regularly assess student learning by using a variety of formal and informal assessment strategies
  • Facilitate positive interactions between students and teachers, students and peers, and students and other adults
  • Model learning and behavior consistent with the expectations for students
  • Always keep the students' needs and rights first and foremost in any educational decision-making
  • Provide direction and classroom supervision of support staff
  • Acquire knowledge of the goals of the Minneapolis Public School Early Childhood Strategic Plan. Work to support and achieve those goals
  • Assess own instructional effectiveness through District SOEI and the Professional Development Process (PDP)
  • Collaborate with peers to develop, plan and implement best practices based on the needs/abilities of the students
  • Utilize digital programs including but not limited to Microsoft Outlook, Teams, Google Drive, Google Meet, Promethean Board, and SharePoint
  • Travel between sites required
  • Evening and Saturday work required

The candidateselected for this role will be required to provide a passing proficient score on the ACTFL language assessment through www.languagetesting.com . The initial testing feerange from $70 -$140 payable by the candidate.

Final candidates may be invited to interview with a committee. Final appointment to this position will be contingent upon passing a criminal background check.
