Description

Summary: Responsible for art program planning and implementation and art room management. In providing these services, the art teacher works closely with classroom teachers and related service providers to help students attain and maintain their maximum levels of functioning. The Art Teacher is also responsible for developing art projects and art education activities that supports classroom curriculum and student goals.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Art Education
  • Maryland Standard Professional Certificate as an Art Teacher or eligibility for Conditional Certificate. If teacher holds a Conditional Certificate, teacher must complete requirements for a Standard Professional Certificate within the required timeframe.
  • Three years' experience with special education students
  • School based experience in art instruction
  • Knowledge of a wide range of art mediums
  • Experience working with students with Autism Spectrum Disorder or other related disorders
  • Experience creating differentiated lesson plans to meet student needs
  • Excellent oral communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others to achieve the goals of the art program
  • Computer skills related to common office tasks such as email, conducting internet searches, and using MSOffice (e.g., MSWord, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Flexibility with regard to daily routine and responsibilities
  • Familiarity with Applied Behavior Analysis preferred

Responsibilities
  • Provide art education for students in all school programs
  • Adaptation of programs as needed on individual basis
  • Enable students to develop art skills and knowledge
  • Provide students with a medium to explore personal artistic expression through a range of media (i.e. painting, ceramics, printmaking)
  • Adapt art programs as needed
  • Collaborate with program and classroom staff to coordinate themes, lesson objectives, and structure of art classes
  • Hold confidential all knowledge of students and their families
