    Position Purpos e
    To provide an instructional program that will help students to:
    • Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them
    • Ask questions and define problems
    • Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others
    • Develop and use models
    • Use appropriate mathematical and computational tools strategically
    • Construct scientific explanations using evidence
    • Engage in scientific arguments using evidence
    • Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information

    Essential Responsibilities
    • Implements GPS science curriculum consistent with school district goals, mission and vision.
    • Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning.
    • Promotes a classroom environment that allows students the opportunity to solve rigorous real-world scientific problems.
    • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction.
    • Incorporates inquiry-based learning opportunities into instruction.
    • Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student's needs, including students with special needs; conducts individual small group instruction as needed.
    • Provides appropriate, meaningful, and timely feedback to improve student achievement.
    • Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings.
    • Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
    • Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
    • Ensures that students conduct conforms with the school's standards and school district policies, and establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
    • Coordinates with other school professional staff members, especially within grade level, to evaluate and assess curriculum, and participates in faculty meetings and committees.
    • Maintains familiarity with district and Connecticut State standardized tests for the purpose of adapting curriculum to maximize student achievement on such tests.
    • Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.
    • Incorporates technology and digital tools appropriately into instruction.
    • Reviews and implements modifications, accommodations, and intervention plans for all students both general and special education.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.
    • Knowledge of GPS Science curriculum, and the Next Generation Science Standards.
    • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
    • Ability to use a learning management system and software applications as needed.
    • Ability to utilize a learning management system to interact and engage students.
    • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
    • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
    • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
    • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
    • Ability to provide students with opportunities to develop critical thinking skills, while affording opportunity for creative activity.
    • Ability to collaborate with instructional teams.
    • Ability to employ a variety of teaching techniques through the use of appropriate instructional materials to meet the needs of all learners.
    • Ability to provide students the opportunity to be critical thinkers of online content.
    • Knowledge of steps required to establish safe working conditions for students in the laboratory, including all lab materials, chemicals, equipment, and tools.
    • Ability to maintain a safe working laboratory environment for students.

    Equipment

    Qualifications Profile
    • Certification/License
    • CT State Certification as a Biology 7-12 teacher (032)

    Education
    • Bachelor's from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
    • Master's Degree preferred.
