Job Summary
The Language Arts Curriculum Coordinator develops and maintains the district K–12 English/Language Arts program with a focus on state and national ELA standards. The coordinator assists with the development and vision of an articulated, innovative 21 st Century Language Arts programs and recommends and implements changes to assure program integrity, relevance, and best instructional practices across grade levels. The coordinator reports to and is evaluated by the senior director of Teaching and Learning. The position is based at the ASD Education Center but involves travel throughout the district. This position requires a valid Alaska teaching or administrative certificate and has a retirement association with the Alaska Teachers' Retirement System (TRS).

Job Requirements
The following are required:
  1. Master's degree from an accredited college or university.
  2. A valid Alaska initial, professional, or master teaching certificate.
  3. Evidence of 5 years successful educational experience teaching English/Language Arts.

The following is preferred:
  1. A valid Alaska type B administrative certificate or willing to work toward obtaining a type B administrative certificate.
  2. Five years of successful teaching of secondary English/Language Arts.
  3. Strong understanding of ELA content, Common Core State Standards, best practices in ELA instruction, assessment, collaborative teams, and data-based decision making.
  4. Strong leadership skills, planning and organizational skills, and communication and interpersonal abilities.
  5. Experience working with district-level and school-level teams providing support for instructional improvement and decision-making.Strong advocacy for ELA/literacy education.


Essential Job Functions
  1. Leads the district in maintaining and ensuring across all schools a consistent rigorous and equitable ELA/literacy education experience based on national best practices and differentiated instruction.Coordinates across departments and divisions within ASD to implement a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) for all students.Researches and disseminates current scientific-evidenced based practices in ELA/literacy education and delivery of such including technology, standards integration, cultural responsiveness, differentiation, and modeling of lessons.
  2. With input from all stakeholders, develops, reviews, revises, and supports implementation of ELA curriculum and academic plans aligned to adopted standards.
  3. Monitors curriculum implementation and provides the structure for program evaluation.Schedules and chairs regular meetings of the ELA curriculum committees, instructional coaches, MTSS teams, and others, as needed.Assists in ensuring educators have current, appropriate materials including print, software, hardware, and other equipment.Is the point of contact for collaborating with community partnerships, universities, and state and national organizations with a goal of promoting ELA/literacy education.Organizes, leads, and develops meaningful, practical, innovative, and ongoing professional development in ELA content and pedagogy.Coordinates and facilitates student participation in local, state, and national ELA events and competitions as needed.Provides opportunities for parent forums and ELA education efforts to demonstrate the relevance of ELA/literacy education.Coordinates with other curriculum coordinators to plan, facilitate, and conduct training as needed.Assists in writing and managing grants to further district and department objectives and initiatives.
  4. Maintains the confidentiality of school and student records.

Physical /Mental Demands
The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.

While performing the duties of this job the employee may be regularly exposed to a video display. The employee may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
