Supervised by and/or Reports to: Building Principal

General Responsibilities: Provide competency-based instruction in the Emergency Medical Technician program. Responsible for designing, developing, delivering and upgrading curricula to meet current industry needs and standards.

Essential Duties:

General Responsibilities:
  • Teaches the Emergency Medical Technician course to high school students, grades 11-12.
  • Coordinates the clinical experience, lab and classroom activities as well as arranges for clinical experiences with the community.
  • Organizes and maintains the clinical lab, equipment and student records.
  • Teaches knowledge and understanding of EMT careers.
  • Conducts ongoing assessment of student growth and progress in EMT activities; modifies instructional methods to fit individual student's needs, including students with special needs; conducts individual and small group instruction as needed.
  • Maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement, and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
  • Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
  • Ensures that student conduct conforms to the school's standards and school district policies, and establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
  • Selects and requisitions appropriate instructional aids, supplies, and equipment and maintains inventory records in accordance with District Policies and Procedures.
  • Maintains abreast of all Virginia Department of Education expectations and requirements related to EMT instruction.
  • Participates in making curriculum revisions/realignment of standards addressing the incorporation of 21 st Century Learning Skills.
  • Identifies best practices for instructional delivery and works with the local hospital staff development division to coordinate public private partnership for education to improve student achievement and engagement in learning (i.e., problem-based learning, health care related topics, etc.).
  • Teaches CPR.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Requisite Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong foundational knowledge in Emergency Medical Services.
  • Experience in the workforce environment and ability in developing and implementing curriculum designed to improve achievement in Emergency Medical Services, preferred.
  • Ability to use computer and basic software applications for student record keeping and general office use.
  • Minimum of two years of clinical experience.
  • Knowledge of community resources for fire and emergency medical services.
  • Excellent human relations, oral, and written communication skills.


Requisite Education and Experience:

  • Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia Teaching License with an Emergency Medical Technician endorsement.
  • Must possess and maintain the Virginia Education Coordinator certification through the Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services.
  • Must possess and maintain an Emergency Medical Technician certification through the Virginia Department of Health.


Physical Requirements:

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to: a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Some climbing, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, or repetitive motions required.
