    WORK YEAR: 187 work days, 7.5 hours/day, Monday - Friday
    WORK STATUS: Licensed, Full Time Exempt
    REPORTS TO: School Principal and Special Education Director

    POSITION SUMMARY:
    This position is for the 21-22 school year and is probationary unless the selected candidate is hired after the first student day. Per Master Agreement, when a position is filled after the opening of school by an individual who was not employed by the District in the previous school year, that employee will receive a one-year temporary contract.

    The Educator must be licensed in Special Education with an endorsement in Elementary Education. In addition, the District is also seeking someone who has a background with students who have intensive cognitive, behavioral and academic needs. This teacher will perform effective teaching methods to ensure student success and promote an exemplary educational program which fosters achievement for all students. Must be able to manage a team including related service providers and paraprofessionals. Develops and promotes good relations among community and school clientele. Must be trained (or willing to be trained) in Enrich IEP software and Crisis Prevention (CPI).

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • Strong knowledge of content area, teaching methods, learning styles and educational research related to learners with all types of special needs.
    • Build strong relationships with students and families
    • Demonstrate an understanding of the scope and sequence of a special education curriculum.
    • Proficient in classroom management, communication, organization and planning skills including de-escalation strategies
    • Providing day to day supervision of paraprofessionals
    • Experience in developing and implementing individualized education programs (IEPs).
    • Knowledge of both formal and informal diagnostic assessments for students with a variety of learning difficulties.
    • Demonstrate knowledge in literacy and numeracy intervention programs.
    • Experience in administration and interpretation of standardized and informal special education assessments.
    • Demonstrate problem-solving skills through collaborative work with students, teachers, parents and administrators.
    • Participate collaboratively in teaching teams to design curriculum and assessments.
    • Ability to align curriculum and assessments with Colorado Content Standards.
    • Positively impact achievement and differentiate instruction based on the needs of the students by supporting programs designed to increase student achievement
    • Perform other duties as may be assigned by the building principal or Special Education Director in accordance with district policies.

    SUPERVISORY DUTIES:
    None

    POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
    • The Special Education Teacher shall hold a valid Colorado license with approved endorsement as a teacher of the category of handicap being taught.
    • Bachelor's degree or higher required from an accredited university or college.
    • Completed a state approved Teacher Preparation Program, participation in a Teacher in Resident Program or participation in an Alternative Teacher License program.
    • Demonstrates competency by one of the following means:
      • Pass the Place or Praxis test.
      • Pass the Veteran Teacher HOUSSE, held a license on or before July 1, 2006 and has had one or more years of completed teaching experience.

    GENERAL EXPECTATIONS:
    • Demonstrate knowledge and skill regarding the components of effective instruction.
    • Demonstrate knowledge of content and teaching methods in areas of the teaching assignment.
    • Demonstrate knowledge of developmental needs of students.
    • Demonstrate effective written and oral communication skills.
    • Evidence of ability to establish and maintain effective, cooperative relationships with school personnel, students and parents.
    • Demonstrate understanding and empathy necessary for working with students

    ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions required the following physical demands: some lifting up to 50 pounds, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling: and signification fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires sitting, walking, and standing. This job is performed in generally a clean and healthy environment.

    CLEARANCES:
    Must clear background check through the CBI and the FBI through Fingerprint submission.

    SALARY:
    Placement on Licensed Salary Schedule based upon previous teaching experience and highest degree and college credits earned after student teaching was completed. Current Board approved Licensed Teacher Salary Schedule, Salary Placement Policy, and Master Agreement are available for review on our district website at www.ssd2.org. Highest initial step placement on the Licensed Salary Schedule is Step 9.

    Employees who are scheduled to work 30 or more hours per week in the 2021/2022 school year are eligible to obtain district health benefits which include medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance and supplemental benefits. Positions that qualify for health benefits also qualify for leave which could include vacation and daily leave to be determined by the position and number of days assigned. Sheridan School District No. 2 is a public employer and participates in the Colorado Public Employees' Retirement Association (PERA). All employees are required by state statute to contribute 10.5% of salary on a pre-tax basis to PERA through 6/30/2019.
